Connected to wifi router, can't connect to internet

Same wifi network works on my laptop but not my desktop. Running the troubleshooter on my desktop comes up with no errors. My ipconfig /all is below. Thanks in advance.

According to this you should have a connection so something may be blocking the connection like an Anti Virus software.

Does it show up as connected but the browsers won't go anywhere? If so I have something for that.

So can you 'ping google.com' from that CMD window?

It says it's connected, but when I pinged google.com several times. The first time 1 out of 4 attempts came through, the other 3 timed out. Each subsequent time, all 4 attempts timed out. I've tried disabling my anti-virus software, but it didn't help.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type the commands one at a time into an elevated command prompt, hit enter after each one then reboot the machine. Let me know if that has any effect on the problem.

Usually when only 1 out of 4 packets makes it to the destination and back, that means there's a duplicate IP address on your network. This typically happens when you reset the router and it "forgot" one of the systems on your network and gave its address to another system too. Windows is supposed to detect that situation but sometimes appears to not do so, typically when the firewall on one of the computers is configured to reject certain ICMP packets.

The solution is to refresh your IP address on each computer and device attached to the network. On your Windows computers, as an administrator command window (right-click and 'Run as Administrator') do 'ipconfig /release' followed by an 'ipconfig /renew' so they all get a new (hopefully non-duplicate) IP address. Heck, the release/renew on all your computers might be a good idea anyhow. On your WiFI-connected devices, such as Android phones and iDevices, hold down the power button and tell them to shut down when the red slider or shutdown menu appears, then after they turn themselves off turn them back on again. If you have a BluRay player or other WiFi-connected device, either disable networking and then re-enable networking in its Settings menu, or remove power, wait 10 seconds, then re-apply power. Your DHCP server in your router will then have an up to date notion of what all your IP addresses are and won't hand out duplicates while doing this.

Chev45, I'm using Avast. I tried those commands but it didn't help.

Badtux, when I did ipconfig /renew on the computer that's having the problem, it said
"No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Bluetooth Network Connection while it has its media disconnected."

You need to do the renew on *all* computers and devices, if my theory is correct (that the DHCP server on the wireless router got reset and lost track of which computer has which IP address).

The messages you list are normal for laptops that have Bluetooth, and don't affect the main wireless interface.

Personally, I would dump the Avast and go to Microsoft Security Essentials. I've tried Avast in the past and found it to sometimes cause more problems than it prevented, while MSE Just Works(tm) and stays out of my way.

I did do it on all of my devices. I did the problem computer last and that was the response. It's still not connecting.

I just did it again, this time I got

"No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected.
An error occured while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

Okay, the second error (the one after "Wireless Network Connection 2") is *not* normal. What it indicates is that something is interfering with communications with your DHCP server. Because if your connection had actually dropped, you would get the first error (media disconnected).

I would strongly look at your firewall and antivirus right now...

I just tried disabling both my AV and my firewall, then running ipconfig /renew again, and got the same error.
It also appears that I can connect to other wifi networks fine. It's only having problems with the wifi in my apartment.

Can you go into Device Manager and disable both the Msoft Virtual WiFi mini port adaptor and the Bluetooth connection then check to see if anything changes.

Have you tried running the sfc/scannow command to see if there are any system files missing or corrupted?

I disabled the Virtual WiFi mini port adapter and disconnected my bluetooth dongle, nothing changed.

Running sfc /scannow didn't find any integrity violations.

What about the logs on the wireless router? Check those logs (turn them on if they're not on). Does it see the laptop at all? Is the laptop's MAC address (see ipconfig /all) showing up in the list of connected servers? Does it have a DHCP log that shows what IP address is associated with each system? Can you ping the laptop from the wireless router (most wireless routers have a 'PING' function in their web UI)?

Not sure if this is important, but it's a desktop, not a laptop.
THe logs show the IP addresses, but we use dynamic IP so I'm not sure if that helps.
I don't see an option to ping the computer in the web UI. It's a Netgear router if that matters.

Don't happen to have a Netgear router handy, but last time I did it was in a "Tools" tab somewhere.

Can you ping the computer from other computers on the network?

Does the Netgear router show a MAC address and IP address for every computer on the network?
