New PC Windows 7 64 bit, connects to wifi router but not to internet

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me as i am pulling my hair out here!

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit pre-installed.

The symptoms are that it won't connect wirelessly to my router at home, but will connect with a wire to the same router, and furthermore it will also connect either wired or wirelessly to the network at my office (this is an unsecured wifi network). I never have any problems at work, only at home, and only then with wifi - wired connection works fine.

I did an IP config thingy and got this..... I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Try refreshing your wireless network profiles by removing all of them then just add your own SSID (wireless network).

If that didn't help, you may changing your wireless security (WEP, WPA or WPA2), make sure that you are on WPA2, it's the safest and most secured.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

But i have removed and reconnected to the network and have the same result - connection between the PC and router but no internet connection.

There are several other devices connected to the wireless without problems and the PC reconnects to the internet when i reconnect the hard-wired connection.

Connection security is WPA2. But there is no issue with the connection between the PC and the router - just cannot get internet access.

But unfortunately it is no better. I have updated the drivers etc but no difference - i still cannot get online wirelessly.

Can you please disable your LAN connection and I'd like you to assign this manual DNS - 192.168.1.254
to your WLAN setting? Your ipconfig /all output are showing 2 different DNS servers.

Hi.

This seems to have given us a result!

I disabled the hard wired connection as you suggest, and put in the fixed IP address and ticked the box for 'validate settings on exit'. When i exited the screen it threw up an error message and went into an auto repair - it then said that DHCP was disabled and that this has been fixed. And now i appear to be online wirelessly!

If so this is odd as i had already run the IP refresh utility

You may try running these command lines again if you have already done it: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew if you wish to try it on DHCP or Auto IPs.

From what I'm seeing here the DNS server address at 192.168.0.5 isn't pointing back to the router's default gateway or a valid DNS server address.

When I see a rogue LAN IP address in place where the DNS server or the default gateway should be, it usually means there is another router in the LAN that isn't configured properly or someone typed in a LAN IP where the DNS server IP's should be? Is there a second router in the LAN here?

The Op should either type in a valid DNS server address into the routers settings for DNS servers or remove the invalid DNS server address from the IPv4 properties and type in two good ones like Google DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

I should also point out that the wireless speed can be improved if you can change to the wireless N only setting in the routers settings "no G or below clients can connect" but you get much better wireless speeds. With 5 bars signal strength you can also use channel bonding to achieve 300Mbps.
