Terrible Menu Item Selection Colors... WHY?

I just had a deep desire to vent and this seems like a good place to do it. I looked around a bit, expecting to find a lot of instances of this same complaint, but couldn't find any good ones, so I figured I'd start a topic.

I've been using win7 for a couple years now, and while there's a handful of changes that puzzle me and make me wonder how anyone with half a brain could sign off on, probably the thing that drives me crazy the most is how frickin' difficult the menu colors make it to see which menu item is highlighted. It's incredible. When I push ctrl+alt+delete to get to the task manager, I have to remember that it's four down arrow key presses to get to it (used to be able to just hit "T", but that's a whole separate gripe), because the border and color "change" that gets applied to each item as it's selected is nearly impossible to see. I'm probably tortured by it most often navigating through my bookmarks in firefox. It's bad enough that sometimes I resort to using the mouse so the pointer can let me know what item I'm selecting.

I'm sure there's a way to change it, but it's ridiculous that it's not a easily accessible setting. I'm guessing you have to either use third party software or edit the registry.

I'm surprised there aren't articles devoted to this, because it's so bad and probably could have been fixed so easily. It seems like there are so many frustratingly obvious flaws in every piece of software these days, where if any human on the planet actually used it for 2 minutes they'd be like "oh... well, we have to fix that before letting anyone use this for sure", and this is such a textbook example.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about, in case it's not clear. I blacked out bookmarks containing words that might hurt sensitive people's eyes and/or brains.

I realize it's not impossible to see it, but it could be (and used to be, in XP) a lot more distinguishable, and it's especially hard on lower quality monitors, like the laptop I use at work.

Not asking for help changing it, I just wanted to rant and was hoping others would like to join in on bashing the geniuses who shipped an OS with this "feature".
