Hi and welcome to the 7 forums.
What kind of sound card do you have? Audiophiles would generally have a dedicated soundcard feeding an expensive amp with really good speakers.
One thing you could check is to go to the control panel and click on sound, select speakers and properties. On the advanced tab check (if your hardware supports it) you are set to 24 bit audio and studio quality.
You would also need to rip your music cd's in FLAC (free lossless audio codec) which retains the original glory of the music. Playing this back through a good sound card to a hi fi system sounds every bit as good as the original but is more convenient. Good sound cards costing over $100 will also make MP3 files sound better. Garbage in garbage out, the better the source material the better the output will be. Do a search in goggle for FLAC there you will find codecs to add to Windows Media player. Players like Winamp have FLAC support built in.:D

Audio Codec Comparison Table | Hardware Secrets

The last codec on list ALC898 is pretty close to my old asus Xonar D1 soundcard codec sound output

I don't even bother using the sound card any more cos over hdmi/digital cable the ALC892@192khz (on both motherboards) sounds great in headphones and pumped thru media amp into surround spkrs.

If you are using external DAC then the audio signals (SPDIF) coming out of the computer is irrelevant as the digital signal is being processed externally. Just make sure that the audio bit rate on the computer is set to the higest quality the external DAC supports.
Exactly what do you need to adjust as really your system is obviously of a very high quality?
