Hello. I was recently working on a laptop that I had Windows XP on it. I installed Windows 7 with no issues, except for the "Windows XP Professional Setup" was still in the boot menu.

Upon trying to disable this menu to where the computer simply boots straight into Windows 7, I changed something wrong. I read around at how to disable this menu, and here's what I did . . .

My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings

And I unticked the box that read "Time to display list of operating systems" figuring that Windows 7 would be the default boot. Now the laptop boots straight into Windows XP Setup and I can't get back to Windows 7 to change the settings.

So now, it boots into a setup, says it can't find the Windows installation I want to upgrade, then shuts down.

Did you want to install windows 7 as a dual boot with the existing XP system?

Thank you. But it wouldn't boot from a disc or USB drive.

I solved the problem by connecting the HDD to a desktop and just formatting it through there before installing Windows 7 again.
