Solved Half of new drive unallocated

I have a W7 64 bit machine that I have replaced the primary drive in.

The 1Tb Samsung that came with the PC was failing, so I picked up a 2Tb WD Black caviar. I used Clonezilla to transfer the contents of the 1Tb to my 2Tb and swapped them...the process went perfectly.

Now however the additional 900+Gb shows in Disk Management as unallocated. Can I not incorporate it into Disk C?

Yes, you could extend C: into the unallocated space to add it all to C:, but you would have to use something like the free program MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition to do it.
You wouldn't be able to do it in Disk Management since the unallocated space is not immediately to the right of the partition you want to add it to.

The software you recommended indicates that to merge partitions the partitions must be adjacent. The unallocated space is adjacent to D (HP backup, which I will never use) so could I merge those and then merge the result with C?

Obviously if you havent personally used the program you probably wouldnt know, I may well have to join the forum associated with Partition Wizard, but I thought it would be worth a shot.

No. You would want to do anything with the D partition. You should be able to extend C: directly in to the unallocated space using the program.

If you know never will use the crapware recovery partition, why not simply delete it, and merge everything into one big partition instead? That should not require any special tools to do.

If you decide to delete the D: partition, then I would strongly recommend to create a set of HP recovery DVDs or a HP recovery USB first. This way you will be able to use them to do a factory recovery with instead if needed.

I cannot extend C into the unallocated space ( Which I assigned as a simple drive, letter X) because D is in between.

The software does have a copy function though, but no paste or equivalent. I dont know what one would do with the copy. It seems if I could copy D and create some space on the X and move it there, then delete the original D, hopefully I could then merge C and X

Disk management displays as : System 100Mb NTFS/ C OS 918 Gb NTFS/ D 13 Gb NTFS/ X 931 Gb NTFS

So make 13Gb space on X, copy D move it to that space, delete the original D, then combine C and X?

I dont know if this software works this way.

I've never messed with partitioning, its kinda hurting my head, so I think I'll stop for the night. Thanks for any insights.

I got it done. Thanks for pointing me to this software.
I could indeed move D.
First I created unallocated space on the back of X (my large unused space on the disk that I wanted to merge with C) then moved D there. The program wont let you move to unallocated space first I had to create a NTFS drive from the space then move D. Then I deleted the original D.
Then it was just a matter of merging.
There was one point that freaked me out, merging C and X (the whole point to what I wanted to do) the program popped up error messages indicating that there were errors in the drive and it could not complete the process. Luckily the program has Chkdsk built in and it scanned and fixed the errors, then I was able to merge.
Finally I have a 1.8Tb C drive and will never have to worry about space for pics or music again.
