Not Genuine Windows Build 7601, after 2 years

I bought a new Gateway DX4840 from Fry's about 2 years ago with Windows 7 Home Premium. It has the genuine windows stickers on the side with the product keys. It has worked fine until about a month and a half ago when it suddenly said windows is not genuine. I called Microsoft and they walked me through several things and then finally said it was Gateway's fault and I had to contact them to fix it. When I tried to contact Gateway they said my warranty is expired so they will not even talk to me on the phone unless I pay to renew my warranty. So instead I tried to just re-format my computer and re-install from the recovery disk. This worked for awhile and I was able to re-active windows and it said it was genuine again (also did all the MS updates at that time), but then about a week later the error popped up again. So this time I did a full hard disk wipe (before I only reformatted the C drive and left the data partition intact). This time it has been good for a little over two weeks but today again it showed up as not genuine. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Feel like it might be time to move to Linux.

Hello and welcome sudukai Hum pretty ordinary service from M$ and the dealer eh?

If you have the original activation code then you could try this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

If all else fails then personally I would stick a SSD in buy an OEM and just install that but depends on th e budget of course and if the SSD is going to be big enough for what you want it for - but you can back up data to externals to free the SSD up a bit if it gets a bit full.

That's the first time for a long while that the reason for the service not starting hasn't been obvious from that data.

Please run the following commands from an Elevated Command Prompt, and post the results.

SC QUERYEX SPLDR
SC START SPLDR
NET START SPLDR
SC QUERYEX SPLDR

DIR C:\Windows\spldr.sys /S

I'll be in bed by the time you've done that - so while I'm sleeping, please run the standard system checks....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

After I typed "CHKDSK C: /R" it said that it would run at reboot as you mentioned. However when I rebooted I did not notice anything happening, computer booted up quickly as normal. However after this reboot the non-genuine windows error at the bottom right of the screen went away and if I clicked properties on My Computer it once again said genuine windows.

The SFC scan did not come up with any errors. Attached is the log. View attachment 254934

Very odd.
The 0x31 Exit Code means 'A device attached to the system is not functioning' - but I have no real idea what that means in terms of this service, and I suspect that unless it happens again, we're unlikely to find out.

At least it seems to be working again now.

It may have been a transient error, or it may be a sign of malware.

The fact that the CHKDSK didn't run is a minor concern - try running the less strenuous CHKDSK C: /F the same way, and see if that produces any different behaviour.

The CBS.log appears to be essentially error-free.

When I ran CHKDSK C: /F and rebooted, I did see as screen come up that said it was doing a scan. However it was only there for about 5 seconds before it went to the windows log in screen. Not sure if that is long enough for it to have finished or not, I do have the C drive partitioned only for programs if that makes any difference (right now it is 55GB used in C drive). One strange thing was this morning it was at the windows log in screen and I could move the mouse, but nothing else was responding (like typing in password or clicking on power down button) so I had to do a hard power down...not sure if related to anything or not. As far as attached devices I have a wireless keyboard/mouse (and a second keyboard mouse in the living room that is normally turned off), dual monitors DVI/VGA, HDMI going to my living room TV (normally not selected), and USB speakers.

Thanks again for all the help. I can post again if the error comes back unless you have other ideas of things to look at now.

CHKDSK not running is beginning to worry me - that sort of thing can be a minor irritant, or it can be the result of a failing drive.
You should check for the latter by downloading the HD manufacturer's test utility and creating the boot disk, and running the quick scan. If that fails, back up your data before proceeding to a full scan, as the deep scan can cause a failing disk to completely die.

I downloaded the Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tool and ran both the "quick test" and "extended test" on my primary HD as well as my secondary backup HD. All these tests reported as passing.

Lets see if an Offline scan works...

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Recovery Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

Once complete, type

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

NoelDP,

I'll run the above checks shortly. In the mean time I had another shutdown from unexpected error. In case it is related to anything here is what the recovery message said. So far I still don't have the genuine windows error showing up again yet. I can attach the two files it mentions below if you think it is useful and doesn't contain any private info. The .dmp file didn't seem to be formatted to be read by a text editor, but the xml file looks readable.

Turns out the windows partition was (G:\) for those instructions even though it is normally mapped to (C:\). Both scans ran fine in offline mode. The CHKDSK scan said it found some free space marked as allocated in the bitmap volume and that it corrected it. The sfc scan did not find any issues.

Please now run CHKDSK C: /F from within Windows (you'll have to reboot for it to run) - does that work OK?

Perhaps a good old fashioned scan for root kits and general malware using tdsskiller and WDO I'm not by any regards an expert in this kind of thing but something does seem rather amiss here it seems like something is hijacking your boot up process.
