Hello,
I've been getting the "Windows not genuine" message popping up for several months on a 2 -year old home built system (I bought & activated a genuine copy of Windows 7). I've included the MGADiag report below. I've recently reactivated Windows using the Microsoft phone number but that didn't help. The lack of windows updates is now becoming a major problem!

I see in the report below there are several "tampered files". What's the best way of fixing these?
A Kaspersky virus/malware scan reports no problems.

I'm hoping some of you very helpful folks here can help. Thanks

SFC came up with a error. After completing its initial verification phase, it reported "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested task"

The new MGADiag is below. There are still file mismatches & tampered files listed.

Why don't you go for a complete re-installation. Take backups of all data. Format system partition and re-install windows 7 freshly. Then try the activation.
If that works, then it indicates there was a malware hindering your system activation. So be careful when you do restoration of data.

Hello lrj and welcome to the forums

Where did you purchase this license from?

Your OS has been activated with a MSDN key which have very strict usage restrictions. Unless you obtained this license from your employer, educational institute or you hold a MSDN/TechNet subscription yourself, then it is counterfeit.

If that works, then it indicates there was a malware hindering your system activation. So be careful when you do restoration of data.

I'm sorry, but this is complete nonsense. There is no indication of any form of malware here, so there is no need to scare other members. The problem is quite clearly due to the blocked MSDN key which is nothing to do with malware.

Tom

Thanks a lot Tom,

It's not looking good. I bought this copy of Windows on ebay in 2010 for £70, from a UK seller who is not currently selling anything else. It came in a genuine looking Microsoft retail box with holograms etc
on the disc, so that must have fooled me.

I'll email the seller just in case. Could you tell me where in the MGADiag report you found its an MSDN license, so I can quote that? Thanks.

I suppose my best course of action is to buy a definitely genuine new license, and apply that to my existing installation. I don't want to reinstall windows from scratch.

Taa

Hi IRJ,

Another option is to report this to Microsoft - they have been known to reward counterfeit reports by sending out a genuine licence, although this isn't always the case.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/howtotell/cfr/report.aspx

I would strongly consider a clean install, since you have no way of knowing what may have been "bundled" with this licence you purchased.

Regards,
Golden

Hi lrj,

No problem. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Yeah, you should keep a very wide berth of ebay when looking for software as a very high proportion of it is counterfeit. I've lost count of the number of times someone has turned up here with a blocked MSDN key that they bought from ebay. The counterfeiters have got very good at making Windows 7 fakes and it's unlikely that you would have spotted it unless you knew what you were looking for. You may find this video interesting:

NoelDP has a great post that he uses for MSDN licenses:

The major problem is that the Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Hope you don't mind me pinching it, Noel! :)

Looking at your MGADiag log, you will see the line beginning Windows Product ID:

Windows Product ID: 00371-221-4472301-86572
Windows Product ID Type: 5
Windows License Type: Retail
Product IDs take the form:

{locale code for language}-{Channel ID}-...

The second block, the Channel ID, is what indicates where the license came from. Your CID is 221:

00371-221-4472301-86572

221 indicates a Windows 7 Professional MSDN license:

Suspect: 065, 066, 067, 068 for Windows 7 Ultimate edition, 220 area for Professional, and the 230, 231 area for Home Premium. There are probably others but they should be close to those posted.

Good luck! Give me a shout if you have any further questions :)

Thanks so much Tom, and also Golden.

That's very useful info indeed. If there's anything useful to say I'll post on here how I eventually get on.

Just for info, I reported & then sent the non-genuine copy of Windows to Microsoft, who replaced it with a new copy free of charge. The old copy was Windows 7 pro & the new was Win 7 ultimate (they only offer ultimate). I've installed the new copy.

Good news indeed!

It used to be the case that they would only replace with Pro rather than Ultimate, so you ended up getting an upgrade, rather than many who could only get a downgrade :)
