Hi guys.
I bought this Emachines laptop off Ebay recently with 7 already on it. It's been running perfectly fine up until this morning when, on startup, it popped up a Windows activation window showing "Windows not genuine" and error code 0xC004F200.

All Greek to me I'm afraid!

It has Microsoft Security Essentials installed.
It hasn't had any registry cleaners used on it that I'm aware of.

Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid you have been conned - this laptop is installed with a counterfeit Windows 7 installation meant for an ACER laptop.

You can either contact the seller and attempt to get your money back (unlikely), or purchase and install a genuine Windows 7 product from a reputable store.

The installation is counterfeit - on two points.

1) An Activation Exploit has been used in an attempt to force activation using an ASUS SLIC table in an Acer machine

2) RemoveWAT has been used in an attempt to bypass activation and validation requirements.


For what version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case?

You can reinstall that edition of Windows - either using the manufacturer's Recovery media for that machine, or a downloaded Retail ISO/disk.

You should also register a complain with eBay/PayPal, and with the vendor.

Sadly the COA sticker is too worn to read and I don't have any recovery media for the machine.

I've emailed the seller but I won't be holding my breath...

Can you still buy Windows 7 direct from MS or would I need to go elsewhere? Would I need to buy in MS office as well?

The Office Pro Plus installation is a Volume Licensed one - and therefore non-genuine, if it came with the machine.

You may be able to order a set of Recovery disks from the manufacturer - it's a lot cheaper than buying a new license (so long as the true SLIC table still exists, at least!)

You can buy Windows 7 Full Licenses from anywhere you can find them - but please avoid flea-market sites like eBay and the Amazon MarketPlace (Amazon itself is fine - but not the hangers-on).

You appear to be in the UK (like me) and stocks appears to be getting short already, so a little hunting around would be in order. Third-party vendors are generally a fair amount cheaper than MS
Do you really need Ultimate - or would Home Premium or Pro suffice?

Note that OEM software is restricted to use on the first motherboard on which it is activated - so on a second-hand machine, a Full Retail license would be far preferable!

Hi Golden... E-machines are made by Acer . Just to let you know . So it might be legit . But as of this year Acer will be discontinuing the E-machines brand and stick to Gateway and Acer.
