Solved Question About Free Email Servers

I got a @Outlook.com email address. On these free ones, do you have to use your own ISP to send the emails (SMTP) or can you use the Outlook.com to send them? I can receive on the Outlook.com (pop) but am having a heck of a time sending emails. Anyone know? Thanks,

If you like, you can also sign in online for Outlook email.

I do have the Outlook email, outlook.com. I am using MS Outlook for my client. On the instructions to make Outlook.com usable on a pop client, it gave instructions to use Outlook.com as the SMTP but I am having a problem getting it to send. I was just wondering if on the free email, you must use the settings for your ISP to send email? Thanks,

One can use only the free online version and not use anything from your ISP. Don't add it to Outlook or another separate email client such as WLM.

I am wanting to use it as a pop address and not just a webmail. What did you mean by the bold above?

I can send and receive with a Hotmail.com (free) address using MS Outlook 2010.
The servers are
Incoming POP3: pop3.live.com
Outgoing SMTP: smtp.live.com

If you have MS Outlook 2013 that might make a difference...

If you’re using Outlook 2013, you should not use POP3. You should just use EAS as it configures everything automatically.

I meant don't use Outlook to access webmail. Windows Live Mail, WLM, maybe it's defunct now, I don't use it, only yahoo mail.

I am using Outlook 2003, but I don't think that would matter. I can receive OK with Outlook.Com but can not send. My test messages work OK, but can not send an email. It just hangs in the Outbox until I delete it. It appears I have everything setup OK. My webmail works fine, but I was wanting to get the Pop working in case I change ISP, I can keep the same email address. I appreciate your help. I will just keep searching.

Did you try using the smtp.live.com server for outgoing?

FWIW: You might want to set the smtp port to either 2525 or 587 as most ISP's block port 25.

Yes, I have tried both of those. It seems I am doing everything OK. It must be just one setting that is messing things up.

My Outgoing port is 587 using TLS encryption.

Have you done a send/receive after the message is in the Outbox, and it doesn't get sent?

I was just on the forums for outlook.com and they talked about the android and email.

If you’re unable to use the app for any reason, you can still set up Outlook.com on your Android device. Here’s how:

On your device, tap Email, then tap Add account.
Enter your Outlook.com email address and password, then tap Manual setup.
Under What type of account is this? tap Exchange.
If there is a Domain field, leave it blank. If there is a Username field, enter your email address.
Enter your password.
For Server name enter m.hotmail.com.
Make sure the Use secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked, then tap Next.
Choose your account options and tap Next.
To finish setup, tap Done.

I have not tried it on my iphone but it is worth a shot as well as trying what bigmc said in an earlier message here.

I have been battling this for most of the day, well a few hours anyway.

I ran across this program that did the trick. It is called "Outlook Connector" and it configures Outlook.com on MS Outlook. Just what I wanted. Everything appears to be set the same as I did it manually except it is not POP/SMTP but is MAPI which is MS own protocol. Don't know why or don't care that much, it just works now. That is all I wanted. Thanks to all of you for pitching in with your advice as I was about at my wits end.

Hi Jim,
Glad to hear you got it working.
I didn't think to mention MAPI/Outlook Connector as a possibility because you mentioned POP

Anyway, I was still curious so I created a new Outlook.com email account.
I created and logged into this account with Firefox, my primary browser and checked POP settings, etc.

I tried adding the new outlook.com email account to MS Outlook 2010 with POP3 protocol.
I ran into the same issue, and could not send an email...

Eventually I logged into Outlook.com webmail with Internet Explorer (IE 10), validated the account, checked the settings...
I then went back to MS Outlook 2010, and could send email from the Outlook.com account with POP3 !
I'm posting this in case anyone else runs into the issue, and wants to use POP3 with an Outlook.com address...
I'm not sure if this is an Outlook.com bug, some new security feature, or just some quirk that worked for me ...

I just added the outlook.com email account to Windows Live Mail (WLM 2011) using POP3 on another PC.
This account setup worked first time, without any issues.
I also actually read an automated message :shock: :doh:

Thanks for your research on this. It appears that the program is setup to make a person log into webmail before the pop will work. Interesting == Let me ask you a question. As far as MAPI and POP/STMP are concerned, aren't they the same except for some internal workings. They both produce the same desired result by getting the messages to come to an email client instead of webmail, is that correct?

Yes, you can use POP or MAPI to get messages into the email client program (MS Outlook).
MAPI is a MS proprietary protocol, similar to IMAP used by many other email providers.
SMTP is used for outgoing mail.
