No 5.1 sound in Windows 7?

My speakers are Logitech Z-5300E, and my audio codec/chip is ALC888.

When configuring audio in hardware and sound to test for 5.1, the test does not work for my center or rear speakers. Does anyone know that the problem is? All connections are correct (color coded), and I have the switch on my speakers for 5.1.

Odd, I have Logitech Z-5500 speakers and the 5.1 setting works fine in Windows 7. Try updating to the latest audio drivers available for your sound card/motherboard, use the Windows Vista drivers that are available.

Yeah I have the latest driver. I updated the driver through device manager and it says I already have the latest driver.

Sound seems to work fine through all the speakers and sub although the rear speakers are a little weak.

It's just that the 5.1 test in Windows does not work for all my speakers.

I had the same problem with Logitech X-540s. I discovered that 7 rearranged the jacks on the back of the PC.

I have 6 audio ports on the back of my PC (like this):

1 2 3
4 5 6

In XP, 1 was Front Left/Right, 2 was Back Left/Right, 3 was Center/Subwoofer. But in 7, 5 was Front Left/Right. So now its:

1 2 3
4 5 6

Not sure why, but it works. I have full 5.1 now.

Hope this helps.

I seem to fix the problem. I found a setting in my sound options for "Speaker Fill"; after enabling it, sound comes out of all the speakers clearly.

The problem I was having with the sound not coming out when testing for 5.1 configuration was because my speakers we're set on Matrix mode (something with Logitech speakers)

I have the same problem with SoundMax. The ASUS Web site has a beta Vista 64x driver (V610005100) driver that produces sound through all channels during configuration, but that none of the apps (iTunes, WMC) use.

I'm currently using the SoundMax V61016180 driver that I found somewhere that behaves the same way. It's odd that during setup sound will come out each speaker during testing but the apps for some reason seem to default to stereo.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Speakerfill is the only thing we can do, it seems. It's not true 5.1... All it does is convert stereo into washed out sounded junk... But I've been using it as well, since I can't get anything else to work.

I am not sure this is a solution or if it'll even work but;
Try going into your sound config screen where you test the speakers, enable 7.1 and screen/check out 2nd set of rear speakers.

I hate the smell of friggin corn chip butt breath snacks.
Tried that, doesn't work. In my normal setup, all of the speakers work in the test, but windows won't play any file in 5.1. In XP, everything I had (with exception to the things not encoded in 5.1) played in full surround. But in 7, absolutely nothing plays in 5.1 except the speaker test. So dumb...

Try reassigning the line in jack to bass/center channel and plugging into it. Fix the no 5.1 problem for me. Or can uninstall the realtek driver and use the one that comes with windows 7.
