Hi,

I want to upgrade my Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 but my install CD is for Professional. Will my computer know what to do and just install the 7 Home Premium version?

If you have a Windows 7 install disc, it will upgrade your system to whatever your Windows 7 key is for. So if the key is for Professional, you'll get professional, if it's for Home Premium, you'll get that.

Problem is that I don't have the key yet. I'm waiting until Oct 22nd when I get my upgrade kit in the mail. I wanted to jump the gun and have my computer setup before then and just punch in the Serial a week from now. Possible?

Vista home to 7 Pro is a no-go

Wasted a couple of hours on Saturday trying to do an upgrade, with MS support offering no acceptable solution

here's the problematic exception - Vista Home will only upgrade with 7 Home or 7 Ultimate - I bought 7 Professional which can only "upgrade" in "custom" mode which is appaarently Microsoft-speak for a complete re-install - the only way to go from Vista Home to 7 Pro requires a re-install of every program, so if you have many MS products, Adobe Prof, etc, and programs like Dragon in which you have invested many hours of "configuring", you are out of luck - further exacerbating the problem is the fact that MS has dictated to vendors (in my case, Staples) that opened product may not be exchanged - the only solution is to send the product back to MS for a change to the proper "7" - as such, disclosure for the product should properly read "allow up to 2 weeks ofr installation"

Frustrated in Gloucester - buyer beware - I have decided to "eat" the $200 upgrade fee and stick with the Vista that I hate
