Now that I have gotten rid of all of my linux machines, I have a need for one, mainly to install and test some work related apps that run on linux server.. I am wondering, if there is a way to install Linux as I did XP, in a Windows 7 virtual machine, and what the steps would be to do so.. This is not a linux is better post in the slightest.. I have been happily running 7 on 3 home based machines for the last 3 months, own 1 copy, and am patiently awaiting the chance to purchase 2 more.. If anything, this function would endear me more to the already brilliant OS..

Thanks!!

yeah. I guess I posted in the wrong subject.. maybe a mod can move this if he/she sees it..

Anyways, those solutions are good, but not really what I am after.. I was hoping to use the built in virtual machine software in win 7, to actually install Linux onto a vitual machine.. Would rather not have more than one vitual machine software running if I can avoid it, and am currently using the xpmode softare..

I get an error that states something about 'please insert a disk in the drive.. with a path to a location'.. any suggestions..

My hope was to create multiple virtual machines, with their own hard drive space, etc.. inside my win7 installation. And my hope was to do this using the built in virtual machine application.. Is it possible to do this?

If nothing works for you, VirtualBox by Sun is a good app for Windows and Linux VMs alike.

If nothing works for you, VirtualBox by Sun is a good app for Windows and Linux VMs alike.

Yes, Sun vBox works very well and you can install directly from the ISO file. I had made a little tutorial a while ago. Don't get confused by the title because it was originally made to install Win7 Beta. But works just as well for Ubuntu - i have one running in vBox.
Tutorial: How to install Windows7 in a Virtual Partition « How-To Geek Forums

Yeah, I had installed Ubuntu on Virtual PC 7 on Vista, but it never worked well since VPC7 is really only for Windows VMs.

A friend told me about VirtualBox and it works like a charm.

Oh sorry, never noticed that you want a virtual one.
Anyways, I just recommend a full-blown Ubuntu dual-boot which can easily be done and un-dune using Wubi.

VPC can install directly from ISO image, like VirtualBox. My Ubuntu 9.04 works just fine on VPC.

Create first a new virtual hard drive (image 1). Go to settings, choose DVD drive from the left pane and browse to find the right ISO or installation CD / DVD on the right pane (image 2).

Sit back and enjoy, let vpc install your OS.

VPC is not supported for the Home edition - you need Ultimate, etc. That was one reason I chose vBox. VPC kind of runs on e.g. Vista Home Premium, but there are flaws. E.g. installing from an .iso was very, very difficult.

To be honest , I havnt bought it myself. I am only using it simply because I get it for free as a student in my college. Once I leave the college, I have to uninstall it :(

Managed to install Ubuntu into Virtual box.. having some trubs with the mouse however. It reminds me of the same symptoms I see when I first install redhat on an HP server, until I install the mouse drivers off the accompanying HP smart start cd.. I move the mouse, but there are two mouse cursers on the screen, and though one moves fluidly, the other, the one that is the actual mouse moves vaguely after it, never quite catching up.. Hoping someone can help me out with this..

VB comes with an ISO image file of add-ons. Under the settings for CD/DVD Roms for the VM, mount the ISO. Start up the VM and you can install the add-ons that include mouse integration.

VMWARE SERVER is 100% free and EFFICIENT.
What's good is that the VM's RUN IN THE BACKGROUND so you don't need to be actually logged on to the VM to run anything - and of course you can access the VM from ANY machine on your LAN or even the Internet without having to start an application like Virtual Box / vmware.

You can also "Auto start" vm's from boot up if you want -- quite useful if the HOST system needs to get re-booted for any reason - you don't have to manually start the virtual machines again. (You can of course do it manually if you want to however).

It works great.

Here's a screenshot

OK this is a Windows XP vm but it will run Linux guests etc quite happily).

IMO vmware still works better than other virtualisation software - and has better "virtual hardware support" too.

cheers

Got that working.. Now.. any idea if it is possible to set up my new linux box, to use the secondary nic on my computer, while my windows 7 box uses the primary. This way, each machine can have it's own IP, and they will be network-able.. Perhaps I should start a new thread...
