The new firmware increases the sequential write performance of the drive as well according to the article.
new firmware for the 34nm NAND-equipped X25-M models. The firmware update brings a 40% boost in the drives' sequential write speed, which will thus top 100 MB/s, and adds support for the TRIM feature in Windows 7 which helps stabilize the performance and health of the SSD over time (and it really does that).

i just applied the firmware update to my machine. Process was very easy...it's an ISO file that you boot from. First boot into Windows and Windows found new hardware and had me reinstall.

The 40% write increase seems to be true according to various reviews and benchmark sites.

I needed to read more closely, the 40% sequential write performance boost was ONLY for the 160GB model of the drive....the 80GB remains the same....

Oh well, it's still super fast. But it has me wondering why they didn't increase the speed of the 80's.

Could have been a bug in the 160 FW that slowed write performance compared to the 80...

It's a little annoying that this only applies to the 34nm though.

I'm happy enough with my gen 1 but why are we not allowed TRIM?

I would think the underlying components of the Gen 2 80GB and the 160GB are the same. Both were originally rated at the same sequential write performance, but now the firmware has boosted the sequential write performance on the 160GB. Maybe it has something to do with the individual memory chips themselves since the 160GB has larger chips.

With regards to the Gen 1..it does stink that Intel won't be supporting TRIM on these devices. Fortunately, the Intel drive doesn't suffer much anyway from this problem and the true nerds among us will simply performance a secure erase every so often to ensure maximum performance from our drive.

EDIT: Never mind...read a little further, the tool box is for win 7 also.

Just update firmware and ran the tool. The recommend running it daily.

Yeah, that has me a little concerned. Although I applied the firmware yesterday and things seem to be alright for my setup. I've rebooted numerous times and again today just to make sure.

Keeping a very close eye on this issue.
