Hi - hope you're all enjoying 7.

I'm currently downloading it & spent the weekend creating a dual boot XP/Ubuntu. I don't want to mess up my system, so can I install 7 into a flash drive (usb)?

Other than that, if I created a new partition through gparted and booted from the 7 iso disk, would my GRUB notice this & respond?

Thanks.

Thanks - judging from the responses this isn't such a simple process. I'll look into the boot manager issue.

Perhaps it's easier just to experiment with an external hard drive, booted from my laptop, or a live usb (does that mean that the whole operating system works from this and avoids my HDD altogether?).

Hi, sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you

I have never installed to a USB drive so I can only say 'Try it'

I think that 7 will probably still overwrite grub though. The best answer is to follow the guide.

The only other option I have would be to remove your normal HDD for the install, but this may make you problems everytime you want to boot when it comes to selecting the OS.

Or as an after thought install windows7 to boot with XP and then reinstall Linux.

Thanks for the response.

I'm going to think very carefully about this. After weeks of getting my system working well with XP & Ubuntu, I'm not going to take any risks...
