Ethernet Issue

Hey everyone,

Today I decided to connect my Windows 7 PC up to my router via Ethernet. I would have thought it would have been a simple task but it seems it can't connect. It says it’s connected to an "Unidentified Network" and not my "NETGEAR" one. I have looked at ipconfig and it does seem my IPv4 address or whatever it is these days is wrong. I don't know what I can do to fix it but I have tried a few solutions already on the internet but have failed. Could anyone please help me?

Thanks,

Set a static ip for IPv4/NIC.

Ip address = same as router config page, only change last part to anything between 2-255 that is not in use on network. 150 is fine choice.

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Default gateway = same ip as router config page, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

Preferred dns = 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 = router's config page

It's now found "NETGEAR" but won't give me the internet access.

Check router for settings that disallow internet access based on mac address. Add your NIC's mac address to allow list if there is one.

Completely remove Bonjour service if it's on your pc. To check, look for presence of mdnsresponder.exe in task manager.

Ok found my router config page.

The default gateway addy is way different, and listed under WAN. I don't have wireless...or does this mean wired? I'm so confused.

I can't find anything like that within my router control panel unless my eyes are playing tricks on me. I also unticked what you said and its just like this:

I will try what you said regarding the DNS.

Cool. I'd also try a reboot since when you have set the ip as static.

I also notice you're set to only 10 mbps in the left screenshot. Check the driver through the device manager to set that to at least 100 or gigabit depending on your onboard capabilities. Auto negotiation should do well unless the router is set wrong too.

I was using WiFi during the installation and have used it since today. I then switched over to ethernet. So you’re telling me, if I reinstall Windows 7 this should be all working fine?

Update: I have changed it so its 100mbps FULL and even half via the Nvidia panel but then it tells me that the cable is unplugged. The router light for the 4th port then like comes on then goes off every so often. (green) but when on the auto option it flashes orange while the other computers are green.
