Unable to scan photos into picture files

I use a Hewlett Packard Model C5180 Printer/Scanner/Copier that is two years old. Since upgrading to Win 7 the "scan to file" feature no longer shows in the scan menu. Nor does the "Import from Scanner" feature work in Windows Live Photo Gallery. When I tried the latter, the computer froze and I had to do a restart.

Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks for any assistance.

Click on 'Devices and Printers, right click on the printer/scanner, choose 'start scan'. When it's done scanning, tag it and preview. It should end up in Pictures library. You can right click on it and "Open With" ... select the program you want to use.

I assume you installed the appropriate W7 Scanner software installed.

HP says ...
1. Click on windows icon or start.
2. Click on search and type ‘scan’.
3. Find ‘scan a document or pictures’ in the above pane.
4. Click on ‘scan a document or pictures’.
5. New window will open try to scan from that windows.

Their site also has These suggestions.

There's even a Better/Easier way if you have Irfanview installed

Thank you Jaycee, that method does work. However, it is too cumbersome to use in my current project of scanning my 35mm pics into the picture file. I have a ton of photos to scan and need the quickest method I can find.

Do you know of any way to get the HP printer to scan the way it should?

Appreciate your input.

Thank you, noyb. I didn't know there was new software available for the scanner. My next step is to download the new software and see what happens. I'll report back after the download, which will probably be tomorrow.

I really appreciate the assistance from you and Jaycee.

Another dilemna: I downloaded the new HP software for the C5180 (previously I incorrectly said it was a C5100). The download went well and all seemed ok until I tried a few test scans.

Can't find the scanned items anywhere. They are supposed to go to the "My Scan" file in the Picture Library, however, I'm still not locating them, even after doing a complete computer scan.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

Thanks for any advice.

That's one reason why I use Irfanview to perform my scans.

It opens the scan in Irfanvew where I can edit it, if needed ..
Then tell it where to save the file.

Standby .. I'm waiting on my W7 computer to boot ...
I want to see how it handles my C5280

- I tried Windows Fax n Scan and it works fine. The problem with it is lack of speed. I have a multitude of 35mm images to scan into my photo library which necessitates all the speed I can get.

- Also looked in the Documents folder/My Scans. Folder is empty.

Something I did notice, though. During the HP scan, it indicates that the scan will be sent to c:\Users\jameswhe\Pictures\My Scans. My picture library is set up under James instead of jameswhe. Wonder if this is causing the problem....

Thanks again for your input, noyb.

I've never scanned Slides ???
Is this scanning just the 35mm size ?? .. or over scanning ??
I'd assume it should be scanning at 600dpi (or greater) .. and that might slow it down.

No, it's all 35mm prints in 4 x 6 size. It is one tedious job.
The slowness in Win FnS comes from the set up and labelling. In HP scan they all go to a My Scan file in Pictures (when working properly.) They can then be renamed to a folder of choice. Although the HP method doesn't set any speed records, it is still faster than any other method I know.

I can't get FnS to automatically crop to the picture size ..
but I can using Irfanview ... not sure if this'll help much.
What DPI are you scanning at ???

If you don't have a good Image editor .. you might want to investigate Irfanview.
It can perform basic edits .. And even has a good batch processor.
Much better than anything M$ provides

you just need to add the "my scans" folder to your photo library, so it will search it for files to add.

noyb - I may give Irfanview a try yet. First, I want to give my best shot to activating the HP scanner. Sent an email to HP for assistance a few minutes ago.
As for editing I currently use Photoshop Elements, although I'm not yet into batch processing.

ccatlett1984 - Yes, I tried creating a My Scans folder in the Picture Library, but the scans never make it there. I'm still puzzled over where they are going. Maybe HP can shed some light on it.

Thanks to both of you for your input. Hope to solve the mystery before long.

If you can find the folder that the scans are going to, you need to right-click on the folder and click "add to library" then select "photo" from the pop-out menu. One thing you can try is to scan in a photo, then do a search of your computer for all image files modified/created in the past 24hours. That should reveal where the files are being placed.

noyb - I may give Irfanview a try yet .... As for editing I currently use Photoshop Elements, although I'm not yet into batch processing ...
Elements has a better batch Processor... with more editing features ... like Auto color adjust.
I use Irfanview as my basic default viewer/editor because it's fast .. and go to Photoshop when I need more editing power.

I can run a scan at 300dpi in about 20>30 seconds...
but then there's the post editing that I'd do in batch processing.

Without a lot of Scan manipulation .. I can't get it to automatically Autocrop .. So I'd probably do this in Batch.

noyb - Thanks for the insight. I will probably get into batch processing at some point in the future. Fortunately, I'm not doing a lot of shooting right now, so it's not a pressing issue at the moment.

For anyone interested in this issue, I was back and forth with HP Customer Care virtually the whole day yesterday, trying all their known remedies. No success. The end result is that I have installed their new software package and the scans now disappear into cyber space. They know of the issue and are working on it with their tekkies. They promised to get back to me.

Hope they can fix it. The C-5180 is a nice machine, if they can just make ALL the features work.

Finally, a solution! And the problem was NOT with HP. Nevertheless, their customer service folks were incredibly helpful while displaying a tenacity toward resolving the issue. My profound thanks to them.

The problem lies in the Win7 Library setup which, in my case, means there are TWO Picture files, two Documents files, two Music files, etc. When doing a computer search for the My Scan folders, the search mechanism didn't search both Picture files/Library. When it didn't find the scans in the first Picture scan folder, it stopped searching (apparently.) It was only by accident that I found the scans, but not in my normal Picture files. They were in the Library Picture folder.

Now to find out how to merge the two files so that they are under the same roof.

Many thanks to all the Forum Folks who assisted with this.
