Hello. I just installed Windows 7 yesterday from Vista (I got a CD through the upgrade because I got a new computer) and the install went fine. It worked for about 4 hours perfectly, but suddenly it just froze. I couldn't do anything with the mouse or keyboard. After manually shutting it off (power button) I can turn it back on, it loads the desktop and I am able to move the mouse for a few seconds, then it freezes.
I've tried booting in Safe Mode (what I'm in right now) and removing all the startup programs, and that didn't help. So now I've come for help.

Current Operating System, pre-install
• Do you have a single OS on your computer, are you planning on multi-booting with this installation? Just 7 right now. I'm planning to do Ubuntu once I get 7 working.
• Are you multi-booting now? No.

Current Hardware
• How many internal hard drives (HD) are connected to your system? 1 250 GB drive.
• Are they IDE or SATA? I don't know. Probably whichever one's worse.
• How many DVD drives are connected to your system? 1
• Are they IDE or SATA Drives? I don't know.
• Any external HDs used? No.
• Are they connected by USB or eSATA? N/A
• Check Disk Management for any HDs listed with a yellow triangle and explanation point? No
• Is this a New Clean HD? No
• Have you pre-formatted the HD? What?

Windows 7 installation details
• Build 7600, Home Premium, 32 bit, from a DVD/CD upgrade disk.

Other
• Any Over Clocking of the RAM, CPU or GPU? No.

Here's my system specs according to SIW: http://drop.io/7information The password is win7
edit: I have learned there's a wordfilter/changer. The password is actually...the opposite of lose then the sum of 3+4, no space.

Thanks!

Look in Computer>Manage>Event Viewer>Administrative view to resolve Errors, especially any Critical.

Look in Computer>Manage>Device Manager for any yellow exclamation marks on devices in error. Click any such devices and Update from internet.

Check Windows Updates for newer incoming drivers.

Uninstall your video driver and restart the computer to see if it solves the issue. It appears your LAN driver is working since you are online, so try this also with sound driver as those are top 3 suspects if no errors shown.

Did you clean install or do an in-place Upgrade? Have you called your manufacturer tech support which is included with the upgrade?

There were 6 critical errors, but they were all about me shutting down the computer manually.

There were no errors in Device Manager.

Windows Update won't open. Can you not do it from Safe Mode or something?

I did a in-place upgrade, and no, I haven't called. (I feel stupid not saying that, I knew there was something I was missing.)

I will uninstall the video driver and report back. Thanks for the response!

Edit: Enabling (which hopefully does the same thing as uninstalling) the video driver did nothing.

I would call the manufacturer's tech support to get the support you purchased with the machine. MS also requires them to give satisfactory support on these Upgrades they supply.

If they cannot get this running right, ask them if they support clean reinstalls, or at least how to do one with the media they supplied. You should have a clean install option and not be made to use only in-place Upgrades as they are frequently problematic.

If they won't support a clean reinstall, try to find out if one is doable from the Upgrade disk they sent, and if apps you need are accessible from that disk without having to install all the bloatware. I sometimes call back in 2-3 times to sweet-talk this info out of another tech.

Most tech enthusiasts won't even use manufacturer's bloatware recovery disks. Since it appears these Upgrade disks being sent are clean copies of Win7, with our help and whatever info you can get out of them you can probably get a superior clean install of Win7 if your in-place Upgrade doesn't pan out.

Yes, I can do a clean install from the upgrade disks (with no bloatware :))
I was actually considering doing that. My question is, will I (most likely) encounter an error/this same error like this if I do a clean install?

This is the key reason to call your tech support: to see if it is already a known issue on your model.
