Starcraft sound

Hi, i have a problem with starcraft brood wars.

i can perfectly install the programm and it works (expect from the good old graphic crashes). But the sound doesnt work. i just can hear the background music from starcraft but no unit sounds etc. not even the sound from the buttons, only the music.

i tried reinstalling for several times, but that didnt help at all, then reinstalled the sound drivers. no changes yet. can anyone help me with my problem???

I'm having the exact same problem; no voices or sound effects in starcraft brood wars, just background music. The only odd thing about my situation is that the voices and sound effects did originally work! But then one day, like any other day, I went to play some online multiplayer with a friend over battlenet, and poof! the only sound which could be heard was the background music.

I tried a bunch of the usuals: sound options, reinstalled the game, reinstalled the drivers for my sound card, tried some blizzard support-- nothing seemed to help.

The only major change that I've made to my computer recently, that I think may have occurred around the same time as the sfx issue, was that I installed an additional hard drive, the one containing my previous os-- it has xp professional media center edition on it, along with all of the games, pictures, and music which I had on my computer before. Including starcraft.

I had planned on wiping the old drive once I had pulled off the files which I wanted to put on my windows 7 drive. I haven't finished it yet though, but I'm working on it now, now that I have some free time. I'm hoping that once I wipe the old drive and/or remove it from my system, the starcraft sfx might magically decide to work again. I haven't a clue what the connection is though. I'm only slightly techy and it's about the best thing I can come up with right now.

Perhaps you have a similar issue, in any case good luck!

the problem with the sound occured first when i installed windows 7. on windows xp it worked almost perfectly, except of some troble with the graphics which occured mostly in multiplayer games. maybe it has something to do with any specific windows 7 applications, which supress the sound. A friend of mine who has the same windows 7 version on his pc running (installed it from the same cd) has no problems with starcraft sounds. Remains a miracle for me...

I haven't had any luck so far; I like where you're going with the applications idea though. Perhaps if we were to compare my applications list with those of you and your friend, we could at least narrow down/isolate a suspicious application.

In any case, StarCraft II can be expected in the near future -- although I'll probably have to make some hardware upgrades if I want to play it on my computer!

Should it be relevant (at least pertaining to the sound drivers it would use) my sound card is a 5.1 channel AOpen Cobra AW-850 Deluxe (C-Media 8738-MX audio chipset). Any similarities to yours here?

Plus your post reminded me about this thread I discovered the problem with my audio for starcraft - a pretty silly thing too. I have a logitech 5.1 speaker system connected to my computer and it has that matrix mode button that you can use to play a stereo signal through all of the speakers. I don't have many games or music that send a full 5.1 signal to the speakers though so I usually just leave the system on matrix mode. However as I discovered one day when I started up starcraft without the system in matrix mode, and noticed that the sound fx had returned, you can not use this when playing starcraft.

Hopefully I'm not the only doofus with this issue. . . depending on one's speaker setup this might be one's problem if they're only getting music when they play SC.

thx for the replies so far, but unfortunately it still doesn't work. I reconfigurated my speakers (they were set on 5.1, although i have only two speakers) but the sound didn't return.
Luckily the guys from Blizzard sent me Starcraft2 Beta-Keys, so i'm no longer playing SC1 =) And the SC2 sound works perfectly...

Nice, I started playing SC2 recently as well, a friend had an "invite a friend", I"m getting killed like crazy but still fun.

Hey, very old thread but I have to contribute.

Had the EXACT same problem happen to me on BOTH XP and OS X. Installed SC and BW, running fine with both music and sound.

After a few days, just music, but no sound (speech, explosions, mission briefings etc, building completions all silent)

Somehow the 'Digital volume' was set on zero, while music stayed at ~30%. I turned digital volume up and the sound came right back.

So, check your digital volume before you screw around w/ all that other stuff!

Old thread, maybe no one will respond, but, I have the sounds, what I don't hear are the mission briefing and the special messages that units say in game(when everything stops moving and people start talking). If you know a fix for this, please, tell me. Thank you in advance.
