I might use this board for a build. DDR3 is about the same price as DDR2, so I will use DDR3, but to my surprise, there are only 1 board that meets this criteria? That's all I can find. Have any of you builders seen any? I can't believe it. I already have the CPU (Core 2 Quad Q8400) or I would probably go with an i5 but this should work fine. I just can't believe this is the only one. It looks like it was just released one or two months ago too. Do you know of one?

Thanks Skunk, I know now why I didn't see these. I (think i) need the ICH10 or ICH10R Southbridge for more than 4 USB ports. This is another criteria. The client uses 4 or 5 USB ports and I will need to use 2 more for the parallel to USB and serial to USB adapters I will be using.

So the ICH10 or ICH10R is one more criteria.

I am going to look through these though, maybe I overlooked something. I could always use the internal USB and use brackets for the back panel I suppose.

Thanks so much for your time.

It looks like the ASRock ones meet the specs.....thanks a lot! I missed them. I don't know if they are any good but will look into them! Thanks again!

I know ASUS has a good reputation.

Asus are good for boards, but in the past that quality has not been passed on to Asrock..?? :(, they do make some nice x58 boards now though.

but seeing as these boards dont differ greatly in their performance, & they're not enthusiast models the Asrock may well be perfect for your clients needs. :)

if he needs more ports & you cant pin down a winner, he could add a USB PCI card..??

Yes, you're right, the ASRock one should be fine for this person. They will do only basic business stuff.

The ASRock ones can use DDR2 OR DDR3 also. That's pretty cool.

I think I will use one of these ASRock ones or the ASUS and see how it goes. I can add a PCI bracket very easily for USB.

This should be fun anyway. I will be interested to see how a Core 2 Quad and DDR3 perform. I suppose there are people out there running regular ATX 775 boards with DDR3 now. It's better than DDR2 I guess. (not by much)

its true......the (DDR3/DDR2) difference will be negligible for general workstation applications, but im sure if you crunch the numbers the DDR3 is slightly quicker (unless the DDR2 sticks are 800mhz @ CL3 :p)

keep us posted nate.....;)

I love your hardware knowledge Skunk. I have ordered the ASUS one. It will be fine for the intended purpose.

I have been making videos of my finished builds and some of the steps. I will post them here or in "show us your rig" next week (or whenever it's done) if anyone cares to watch me fumble around.

(YouTube under the same user name)

Thanks again Skunk. Your knowledge of hardware is vast.

Nice video Nate....... ;) i do like the front of that case.

the AC7 PRO is an outstanding cooler, the (price/performance) ratio is unbeatable.... im using one myself (with a little modificaton :p), my tempratures are EXCELLENT.....

in regards to your fans, you cant convert the 140mm & 120mm to 3pin (the 3rd plug is an RPM sensor which needs to be hardwired into the fan housing i believe)

but you can adapt the fans to run on the mobo headers... i done it myself.

im not sure where you can buy the plugs separately, but find yourself a few of these, or butcher a few old fans for their plugs, cut off the 4pin molex & attach the plugs to the fans keeping the cable colors correct.

you can now attach the fans to your board headers..:)

Thanks for the info and link Skunk. I will follow up on ll of it. Many thanks!

The build I am doing with this motherboard will use this case

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Elite 341 RC-341C-KKN1-GP Black Steel MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

I wish they made more like it. It's only 14.3" high. It seems to be what most people want.....a smaller machine......so I am trying to give them what they "ordered" ......I am very excited to build such a small form factor machine.

It looks to be a "decent" case for what it is. I will have a review of it as well on YouTube. I had a request to record a video on a motherboard and it started to get addicting. It will be fun to watch them in the future.

Hahahaha

Being "Thanksgiving" here in the U.S. I am most thankful I decided to stay single and have no kids. I use that spare money to fuel my hobby.

If you wait until 2011 you will be looking at i9, USB3, SATA3, cheaper and better SSDs.....that's going to be worth the wait.

I could chat all night with you Skunk, but i have taken too much of your time i'm sure. We will meet again I'm sure. Have a great night. It's only 4:30 here but looks like it's 11:30 there. Great to talk to you.
