I've read a lot of threads about Win7 servers not being able to see XP servers, but didn't see a lot of clear resolution to the issue.

Just got a new notebook with Win 7 Pro (32 bit). I cannot get it to see our office file server by name (\\633D). However, it can see it fine by IP address (\\192.168.0.103).

What should I look at first?

Hi and welcome

Are you using homegroup for networking? I am sure there must be a reason but if you can access it by IP, is there somereason the named access is important?

633D is the name of the server. Not sure why there would be anything in front of the double slashes.

To be clear

  • open Windows 7 Explorer and type \\192.168.0.103 in the address bar, hit enter, a list of shared folders on that server comes up.
  • open Windows 7 Explorer and type \\633D in the address bar, hit enter, Win7 trundles along for a while and then says "Windows cannot access \\633d". But every other XP machine in the place and the one poor girl using Vista all can access it that way.
