Start Menu remembers folders opened (history disabled)

Under Start menu, if I start typing a folder path (ie, e:\desktop) it will then remember that path (similar to the run history being remembered).

Under Start Menu Properties / Start Menu Privacy -- both check boxes are unchecked. So, I thought nothing should be remembered.

However, it still remembers recently opened folders (only folders opened via typing the path in the start menu).

It stores the entries in the registry under current user / software / microsoft / windows / current version / explorer / runMRU. How can I disable this memory altogether. Would changing the permissions for this particular registry key work?

Anybody know how to really disable this?

I removed permissions on this particular key and it seems to work, but it also now does not display the directory structure when i start typing, ie, typing 'c:\' will not bring up the list of the directories like it used it. Any help?

This may sound silly to you, but i had a similar problem. Solved it activating the Start meny privacy settings (both), rebooting, then deactivating them again and rebooting.

Using windows 7 ultimate rtm (cant remember build :S)

go to Start > Run and type cmd, Now type sfc /scannow
Now download CCleaner to clean temporary files and history,

None of those suggestions fixed it. Anything else?

1) Open regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SearchFolder\Connectors
3) In the tree control right-click on StartMenu and select Permissions
4) Click Advanced
5) Click Owner
6) Click your username and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and hit Ok
7) In the right side rename RunMRU to something like "oldRunMRU"
8) Reboot explorer

There should now not be any MRU entries in start menu search.

This worked. THanks. WHy do they make it so complicated? Shouldn't this behavior be set by unchecking both "store and display..." options on the start menu properties?

It looks like an oversight. The run dialog does respect those settings.
