ok, I have searched and tried about all the available options, clean fan/card, spyware, new and old drivers, riva tuner and my video card fan still makes a racket under no load.....even w/ riva tuner set at 25%, set to run at startup, etc.....

It seems that even w/ fan settings at 25% and rebooting, the fan speed varies, along with the noise.....other than remove card and stick with the built in motherboard card, what can I do.....there was a time a week or so ago it seemed fine.....this problem seems to have come and gone in the past while testing out win7 betas......I have gone as far as removing all nvidia drivers, and using WDDM v 1.1

any help would be soothing to my ears!

video card fan still makes a racket under no load

You mean, the speed is greater while the system is booting up?

Isn't that normal? I have 9800GT, and every time I boot up the PC the fan speed is wild until I almost get to the logon screen, then the speed slows down and everything's fine. This also happens when installing a new OS. I don't think this really is a problem. I'm no expert in hardware, but from my experience, it seems that the card needs a bigger fan speed before Windows loads the graphics drivers and prepares the card for use, along with management of the fan...

any fan that is controlled via the motherboard including grfx cards, the fan will start at 100% and slowly decrease in speed while it is performing POST statup.
other than that, i just use EVGA precision, its great and works with quad, tri sli and a normal stand alone card.
If the fans internal bearings are worn then you will need an alternative cooling source, or just disconnect the original fan and place another fan blowing onto it until you find a better solution?

is what you experiencing a software or hardware problem?

well, now I really went a did it......I purchased the windows 7 download from MS, downloaded it, burned the ISO, which I saved. I was having other issues with win7 so this am I decided to upgrade again using my win7 iso I originally downloaded from MS. Now, it says it is not genuine, and I can't activate because I have no activation key, which I guess it supplied autmatically the first time a few weeks ago....now what?!

well, this post is all over the place, but I did find my product key online @ MS download site, so that solved that problem, and I wrote it down w/ disk, and have it stored on 2 hd's for future loss....

OK, I reinstalled windows, and fan seems to be under control.....before install, the fan speed would fluxuate up and down at any time, usually under no load. I am not a gamer at all, so I found it strange that fan speed would increase under non-stress usage. Anybody have any ideas on why? I stated that I ran spyware checks, regularly dust off fans and cards, etc w/ compressed air, etc.....I even did riva tuner to control fan, and that really didn't help for long, so any suggestions on what could have gone wrong so I can prevent it in the future.

Nvidia has a new driver update, but now I am hesitant to install it....I think that maybe after last update, that is what cause the problem, and rolling back driver didn't seem to keep fan noise under control.....

thx!

just download EVGA precision. i used to use the nvidia control panel to control the fan but it would also be temperamental at times. and always use the latest drivers (though your not a gamer so it does not matter THAT much) as the latest drivers are usually better...usually--key word there people.
