Solved Help with opening "Network" or even sharing center

Help with basic shared documents access between XP & W7

my new laptop is less than a week old.
hp dv6-2044ca.
and i've been trying to configure a home network with the workgroup, WORKGROUP

i need to share files between a XP Desktop and a Laptop that has Windows 7.

i mustve followed a lot of guides and tips by now but i cannot get it to work!

on my laptop, it recognizes the XP computer, but fails to open it
it says i have the naming wrong, yet i know it is correct.
diagnose doesn't help and Pinging the ip address says request timed out 4 times, thne something about 100% packet loss.

on the xp computer side, it recognizes my laptop and can access files

as for network settings, it should be all correct cause i followed this guide that i found on a post by a microsoft worker (i think)

i just cannot figure out what is wrong.

and the error is 0x80070035

my purpose for this is to access Desktop and the printer connected to it
as well as the shared documents folder,..

please anyone

If it told you the naming is incorrect than it's incorrect. You have to use different machine names but you can use the same User name which sometimes helps with sharing and passwords. Also you should Run the Set Up a Network wizard (for wireless networks only).

You also have to use the same workgroup name on all machines in the network.
You also need to make sure that sharing permissions are correct on the XP machine.

There are many threads here with solutions but the solutions are different for everyone it seems so you might want to read through them all.

YOu aren't going to be able to ping your 7 machine because of a setting thats automatically turned off. I will be more than happy to help. Let me do some research and I will get back with you.

A couple of questions. What version of 7? HP, Pro, Ultimate? Are the machines going off wireless? Are you trying to share a folder or the hard drive?

hey chev65, i have read multiple threads, applying their solutions to mine,but i cant get it to work in the end.
workgroup name is the same, "WORKGROUP"
XP settings, i dont know if they are correct but i think they are... XP can access WINDOWS 7 laptop, but not vice versa

it's an HP DV6-2044CA, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Windows 7 is a laptop
Windows XP is a desktop (has the router connected to it)

Windows XP can simply connect to Windows 7 through explorer (\\WINDWS7\Users\)
Windows 7 cannot connect to Windows XP through explorer nor ping (when i ping, it says request timed out, 100% packet loss)

I'm just trying to have a folder shared on Windows XP desktop so my Windows 7 can transfer specific old files off of it, wirelessly.

also, if the connection works properly, i was looking into Sharing Printers.

the WINDOWS XP desktop has a printer connected to it, and i set it on share.
i want it so that when i print frmo my laptop wirelessly, it prints at the DESKTOP printer

the problem is, WINDOWS 7 wont connect to XP.

These settings also need to be enabled in services for Homegroup networking to function properly.
Turn on DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services.

Check that all those services are enabled on both machines.

I would also check file sharing permissions on the XP machine. I hope you aren't using a third party firewall or anti virus because those can create hell and havoc for network sharing.

As for sharing from the desktop... this can be done but for now you will be best served using one of the public user files to share files. You can put one of the public files on your on your desk if you want and share from there. There are other ways to do this but desktop sharing usually isn't enabled by default.

The no ping problem is no doubt the source of your problems but it's difficult to diagnose from here. Possibly a router firmware update would help. I've seen that fix these problems a few times so far.

do you mean workgroup? because homegroup is for windows 7 pcs

windows 7, all of the services are enabled
windows xp, only DNS Client, and SSDP Discovery are enabled because the other 2 services dont seem to exist on the Windows XP Professional SP3.

there are antivirus programs running on the laptop and pc (avast on windows 7 laptop, norton IS 2009 on the windows xp pc) but their firewalls are inactive, windows firewall is on for both computers

my router is uknown, it's a WLB5054AIP model from ZIO but i managed to find the firmware update on a korean site (finding was hard..) and im going to update as soon as my brother lets me go back on the net (he's apparently doing some sort of security thing)

just a random fact, both workgroup names are labelled as "WORKGROUP"

Yes those third party firewalls don't make anything easier that's for sure. That is the first thing I would have disabled had I only known you were using Norton..."The scourge of Windows 7".
