Internet issue Sony Vaio VGN-FW11E

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW11E and according to Sony, i was not eligible for the support on the integration from Vista to Windows 7. However, i still installed Windows 7 64-bit Professional and i initially had a few driver problems such as my touchpad not working, the volume control on my laptop not working, the brightness key functions not working but i managed to fix all of these problems.

Now i have a internet problem. Basically sometimes it works perfectly sometimes i get a little yellow exclamation mark on my wireless internet icon in the bottom right corner and my internet stops working. It's definitely not a router problem because my PC works perfectly fine. Also when i take my laptop to university and access their WiFi, i have the same problem again. It works for a little while and then suddenly i get a exclamation mark on the WiFi icon and the internet stops working. Restarting my laptop does not fix the problem.

I have a feeling it's definitely to do with me integrating to windows 7. But i don't know how to fix the problem.

Any suggestions would be grateful, especially when i need to do my dissertation lol.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have the exact same model and I too have upgraded to windows 7 64-bit. I am having some internet difficulties too, but haven't spend enough time with it yet. I am also having the same problems regarding the touchpad and volume display. I thought it was to do with the VAIO Event Service but it appears not to be!? How did you fix it please?

Thanks

Rod

Regards to your internet issue, in device manager, under networks, go into the properties of Intel WiFi :Link 5100 and go into the power management tab and uncheck the 'allow the computer to turn off to save power'. Also because our laptops are slightly old, thus not 64-bit compatible, Sony didn't update our INTEL driver for the 64-bit systems (So that we purchase the new laptops). However, if you go to the sony website and in the model number box, type in a sony laptop which is 64-bit compatible, and this will allow you to download the 64-bit INTEL driver update which works perfectly.

Hope this helps.

Hello mate, thanks for your response.

I had already installed the VAIO Event Service and it didn't work, however, I uninstalled and installed what you said above and it worked!! I guess that VAIO Event Service depends on VAIO Control Centre?? So my Volume display and brightness etc is all good :) My scroll still doesn't work on my touchpad though, does yours? I've downoaded a pointing device driver from another model to produce no joy, but I'm yet to locate the driver externally without hitting spam-city. I remember the service was called APOINT.EXE by Alps.

I had also, already installed the latest 64-bit INTEL driver for 5100 Series directly from the Intel Website, but that didn't fix it, Again, I uninstalled and re-installed and my first speedtest seems good! Perhaps the 32-bit version doesn't get auto-uninstalled and interferes with the 64-bit version??

Anyways all is good mate, thanks very much for your help, appreciated

Found the driver on Download.com searched for Alps Pointing Device Driver. Works perfectly, in case you have that problem too

This is a very common problem with Windows 7 and older NIC drivers. About all you can do is keep looking for driver updates for your Vaio or try one of the older Sony NIC drivers. I tried Sony support but it says your model isn't listed? Sony eSupport - Computers - Notebook - Select Your Model

Well at least I was correct about this being a driver problem and not some strange Windows 7 problem.

Hi,

My internet issue had been resolved at home, especially since I purchased a Netgear DGN2000 router which works wonders. However, at my university where WIFi is available throughout the campus, i am still having internet issues and it's intermittent. Basically it will work for a 5 minutes and then the yellow exclamtion mark will be displayed on my connection status (usually i either wait or restart my wireless function and it usually works for a little while again until the yellow exclamtion mark arrives again). Also, i noticed that when i went to study at university on the weekend my internet was working majority of the time and i presumed that this may have to do with the fact that fewer people were using the WiFi network as it was a weekend?

At first i thought it may have been a issue with the university's internet, but I have had this problem for a while now and also my friends have no problems with the internet on their laptops either. Anyone have ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

my friend at university a sony vaio laptop with windows 7 and he is having the exact same problem as me in regards to having difficulty connecting to the university internet. The 'signal strength' is always full but it says 'no internet access' with an exclamation mark on the network icon.

So me and my friend went to the I.T department at university and the guy who works there said the problem is due to the Sony Smart Network but doesn't think there is a fix for it. I was wondering would it be possible to uninstall the sony smart network and just use the windows version? Or anyother way that anyone can think of because im not a computer expert. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

You could go into Programs in Control Panel and see if the software is there. Is so uninstall it from there.

What am I doing wrong?
Not installing the correct driver, which I can't point you too as you've not filled THESE in.

Well, since im in this thread I thought it was obdvious that I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW11E or do you mean that you need to know exactly what the 11E is running inside? In that case, here is its specs: Vaio : Sony Europe : Specifications

But I see now that I´m in the wrong thread since this ones main topic is internet issues but my issue is also being adressed here so I hope to get some help.

Every driver I find says I should install the 64-bit version but I cant find it.

Pokeher, exactly what driver did you get from download.com?

Hey mate,

I can't remember exactly what link it was but the above one from FZ21Z should work fine, if you're running 64-bit. (My version number is 7.100.1101.16)

I uninstalled all failed drivers before installing new ones, so try doing that too. Just make sure that no touchpad drivers are installed either through Device Mngr or Add/Remove programs.
