Hi there, I recently upgraded my windows 7 from the release candidate to an oem version that was supplied with a new computer, I completely wiped the old win 7 os and installed on a clean partition, dual boot with xp, install was great, went fast and no errors, but now it takes up to 20 min to start windows. I nuke and paved again, with same results, tried disconnecting all usb devices and printer/scanner, disabled floppy support as i have no floppy drive, ran chkdsk on both drives and ensured no non-pnp devices are installed, as of now only installed programs are world of warcraft, belkin n52te setup editor, google chrome, windows manager and avira antivirus. please let me know what info you require and I will post back. thanks in advance for any help.

20 mins to boot windows what you got a steam engine in there

Ok, so are you sure you did a clean install of 7 ie format the drive and start over

Where does all the time go, does it delay at start up or initializing desktop etc etc???

lol i think a steam engine may be quicker! the drive was fully formatted with swiss knife before windows install, the delay is primarily at the starting windows screen, but I have also noticed a delay in bios load and leading into os selection menu, about 2 min from bios to startup screen including a couple blank screens with flashing cursor that i didn't have with win 7 rc. the delay at start screen ranges 5min to 20min, average is 10-12min.

update: just ran a boot log, for some reason was a very quick startup when i restarted, i see many drivers are not being loaded, unsure if this is normal, will attach log for inspection.

Quite obviously there is a problem. Best to start with the easy steps and hope that we can correct the problem. In an adminstrator account type cmd in search. In the cmd box type sfc /scannow. This will correct any small corruption that may have occured in files or programs. Hopefully, this will work.

Still have a problem, lets go with step 2. Take your Win 7 DVD and install again, but this time do an upgrade install (its is now a repair install). If it does correct the first time try up to 3 times. If you did everything correctly when you first installed, this repair should work.

Possibly you still have a problem, you have a choice to make you can do what I would do or you could wait for others to come and help. Just so you know, our staff is very competent and they may be able to find traditional solution. I, however would just take the easy way and reinstall. Not really a problem, except that you have to reinstall all of your programs. But, maybe you can do that only as you need them.

I gave you the full benefit of my expertise and explained the alternative. Its up to you, but I can assure you, your computer will be up and running very soon.

But getting late and time to go, Christmas you know. I hope that your little compter problem does not hinder your ability to have the best holiday season ever, filled with happiness and love. Take care.

It may be a problem because of the double booting setup. I would image the XP and then nuke it (you can always get it back from the image). Then reinstall Win7 all by itself and see what happens.
Other possibility: If you happen to have 2 HDDs, disconnect the XP HDD and install it on the other. Then you switch with the BIOS Boot setup.

tried the windows disk repair option a few times after sfc, didn't seem to help, just finished selective startup tests, found culprit to be avira antivirus, when disabled boot time drops to 1.5 min or less, guess it's time to find a better free av option. any suggestions?

I dont think dual booting is an issue, as im triple booting xp,vista & 7 with no problems on each of them.
Just remember to do old to new in that order.
Other wise they corrupt certain system files in each setup.
I hope you can get this problem resolved.
But you mentioned you have a pentium D @ 3GHz, you certainly have a decent enough graphics card for aero grahics.
Maybe its just your man in the box......?

Hi,

If you still get get the problem after running sfc , try the clean boot method described for Vista to track down the problem:

How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use

Thank you for advising the clean boot method, although I did know about it, I must admit I learned it from your post several months, ago. So nice to teach, when teaching is the best way to learn.

do you use AHCI sata mode by any chance? I recently discovered this causes slow boots on my machine in windows 7 on many drivers.

Hi

I'm having a similar problem too. Booting only takes 5 minutes at the most.

I CLEANED install Win 7 from XP. (A complicated move, but had to be done)

It was running absolutely fine for the first few weeks. until recently its started hanging around at the windows 7 logo, at the start up

Then once that passes, it takes for ever for my desktop to load up. I have less then 15 Icons, have aprox 5 - 7 start up programmes that all require LOW memory to use.

I'm giving SFC /Scannow a try and i'll post back.

Thanks

Something Else

Something else here I have ran across issues with HP printer software causing issues like these i have traced it back to a service that is trying to start when Windows starts do this to try to sort out this issue.

1. right click on the task bar and choose properties
2. click on the start menu tab
3. click customize
4. scroll down that list and look for run command check that and close those menus
5. click on the start orb
6. click run
7. type msconfig and hit enter
8. go to the services tab
9. check the box at the bottom left coner that says hide all microsoft services
10. if you have an HP printer uncheck the entry's for HP if you don't have an HP printer I would disable all of them
11. click apply
12. click ok
13. restart and see if it starts normal if so you can go back to the services tab and re-enable the services one at a time and restart till you find the one that is causing the issue.
