WEI Score - Hard Drives

Hey everyone!

As my hard disk, I have a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black Edition.. it's 7200RPM, 32MB cache. Yet, WEI only gives it a score of 5.9. Everything else on my PC is a 7.0 or above.. any reason for that?

(See my attachment for a screenshot)

Thanks,

-Bill

Same for me Bill, I have the 640GB version of that HDD. It's my lowest score too. Although quite frankly, if I hadn't looked at the WEI scores, I wouldn't have thought any part of my setup was lagging behind. I will be curious to hear what the more knowledgeable here have to say though.:)

I believe 5.9 on HD score is the highest you'll get with out moving to SSD...

If you got no HD raid array 5.9 appears to be the top mark

Ah, gotcha. I wonder why Microsoft set it up that way when it goes all the way up to 7.9! I could understand 6.9 / 7.9... but not 5.9. ;)

Thanks again,

-Bill

Not sure exactly how it scores the HD's

I do know my WD Black Edition 1TB gets 5.9 as well as my WD 640 Blue.

As already stated seems that's the highest score you can get with a single Spinning drive.

To put things in perspective,

These drives on avg do somewhere at around 85-95 Mb/s getting 5.9 WEI

Some friends that run Raid 0 configs are pushing 150ish Mb/s (with similair 7200rpm drives) getting 6.3 WEI's.
(If i remember correctly, been awhile)

A single 30 OCZ vertex will do approx 200MB/s and WEI gives it a 7.3.

I know there's likely faster single SSds, but by the time you consider these guys in raid using 2 or 3 SSds, theres your 7.9.

Perhaps MS were just considering all of that ahead of time why those choose to do it that way ...

my guess is it somehow takes into acct the access time as well when generating a score. As thats quite a jump from a RAID 0 config, thats only 50MB/s slower. the only real difference is access time is near nothing on a SSD.

Yeah Velociraptor topped out at 5.9, in RAID, they're about 6ish. With the power of hardware these days, the HDD is the bottle neck and will probably continue to be until they get to about the speed of RAM drives.
