There's been a lot of press about how there isn't a an upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7. In this video, Jeremy walked me through using the latest beta of the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, specificallly the User State Migration Tool, to transfer the user settings and files from a Windowx XP installation to a new install of Windows 7 on the same PC.

Hi, I was all on for trying it, but I aborted because of the runaround I seemed to be getting, trying to install the application they were talking about,so I partitioned the XP hard drive and Installed as normal, and it is running like a dream,but I would have liked to have tried the other way just to see what it was like,it looks good ,if you can get it to work.

It has the Windows Vista sticker on it.
More info: It is a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527

When I tried to install XP, I did a clean install by the way, I got most everything to work right except some bugs with the USB mouse and some weird driver errors that the solutions did not fix. I ended up just putting Vista back on, but the system runs very poorly on it.

The program (Deployment kit) is not for win Vista. It is designed for Win XP and Windows 7.

This is a real hassle --apart from having to join this and that etc etc.
It would appear you certainly have to join the connect program and also Windows Live (which I hate anyway) and then it's still a lottery as you might have to wait until you are invited to "join a connection" before you can download the software -- I really can't be bothered with this crap.

I'll upgrade when I have all the tools -- not dependent on whether some bozo thinks "I'm qualified to join their program".

Do it this way (works for everybody).

If you want to go from XP==> W7 you can do it quite easily.
(Note this method only works for 32 bit ===>32 bit)

1) If you have XP HOME then BORROW any copy of VISTA 32 bit.

or
1) If you have XP PRO then Borrow a copy of VISTA ULTIMATE (Home premium / Basic won't do).

OEM copies are OK.

2) Install VISTA via UPGRADE BUT DON'T ACTIVATE.

3) Install VISTA SP2 from the Microsoft download site.

4) Install any further upgrades via microsoft update (Office 2003/2007 etc) AGAIN DON'T ACTIVATE.

5) Now run the Windows 7 update from your VISTA installation.

The Microsoft licensing syststem doesn't check that the copy of VISTA installed on your machine has actually been activated before allowing you to do the upgrade so borrowing the relevant copy of VISTA will work.

(You could even use one from an "alternative source". -Did I really write that?).

OK a bit more work but it saves installing a lot of programs in the long run and finding obscure drivers.

Sometimes as well you might have installed programs where the original manufacturere no longer exists or you can't get hold of the original install material.

The XP==>ViSTA==>W7 upgrades will handle all the compatability problems.

Note - programs that won't install will be flagged by the initial VISTA upgrade --uninstall these first. However 95% of programs DO seem to work --even some really old legacy apps.

Those that absolutely refuse to work but are "must have apps" can be run on an XP virtual machine or by dual booting. A VM is usually a better solution than dual booting where possible.
