can't do clean install from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64

Firstly I apologise if this has already come up on the forums but I've searched and can't find a solution.
I had Vista 32 bit installed on my pc and bought a Windows 7 upgrade disc as I wanted to do a clean install to Windows 7 64 bit. I put the 64 bit disc in and rebooted and the installation got as far as "completing installation" before a BSOD and I couldn't get any further. I tried this many times with no luck. I even reinstalled Vista and started again with no luck. I tried doing an upgrade to Windows 7 32 bit from within Vista out of curiosity and this works fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it won't let me clean install over Vista 32 to Windows 7 64?

If you have not already done so, before you try again, be sure to visit Microsoft.com and use the free upgrade advisor. It will advise of potential problems and incompatiblities between your computer and win7.

If your computer is a 32bit machine, you can't upgrade to 64bit Win7.

I'm not sure why you are having the issue. However, on my XPS I went from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Windows 7. However, I backup up my data, and completely zeroed out the drive first.

I, also, have a Dell XPS, the clean install could not have gone better.

You were able to get it to in-place Upgrade to 32 bit? Did you also try clean installing by booting the 32 bit installer or running it from Vista?

If 32 bit would work all the way around, then it suggests a hardware incompatibility with 64 bit Win7 causing the blue screen.

A way to troubleshoot this could be to examine the install log to see exactly what triggered the blue screen, then either remove that hardware or insert the correct driver at the Custom drives selection screen.

What is your SATA controller set to in BIOS?
 
Jonathan - I've tried disconnecting hardware but still the same.

richc46 - I ran the advisor & no problems were reported.

RogerR - it reboots to the beginning of the installation again but I noticed at reboot it lists both Vista & Windows 7. However, I can't boot into Windows 7. It just starts the installation from the beginning again. I've tried wiping the drive at this point again but it's just an endless cycle.

raf051888 - I have been trying exactly the same thing & I'm completely baffled as to why it's not working for me.

gregrocker - I've tried every option. the only one that worked was an upgrade to 32 bit. No clean installs worked for me. If you can tell me where on 7 to change the setting so stop it rebooting at a blue screen then I can make a note of it & tell you what it says. I'll check the SATA in BIOS & let you know.

If you are determined to get 64 bit install, then shrink your 32 bit installation in Disk Management and format a test partition to continue trying to install 64 bit from booted DVD.

When the install bluescreened, did you try entering Safe Mode by tapping F8 during reboot?

Also, did you try booting into the Win7 DVD Repair console to select Startup Repair and run it repeatedly to try to get Win7 started? Did it find an OS to repair when doing this?

SIW2, where would he find these logs and when? He bluescreens out at booted 64 bit clean install finish. Only succeeded at 32 bit in-place.

u have to do 2things.it may solve ur problem.
on vista,with all drivers installed.check with MS compatibility check software,that does ur pc supports windows 7 x64 or not.
2ndly.if it supports,then go to BIOS and turn SATA mode controller to AHCI and then do clean install from disk,it should solve the problem.

else than this,u might try to install from usb flash disk,simply copy all cd stuff on usb and boot from flash.it will install much quicker too.

I've already checked and yes, my pc supports Windows 7 64 bit.

I'm probably being really stupid here but I can't see where in the BIOS I can change the SATA mode? The only option under SATA is "auto" or "large".

I don't know how your BIOS words it, but look at all the settings until you find options such as non-raid, AHCI, and RAID.

I looked for them but couldn't find them anywhere. This is the first time I've gone into the BIOS on this PC & I've always seen those options on my other PC's but can't see them listed on this one. Only the option to change between auto or large. If it helps, it's an ASUS motherboard with Phoenix BIOS.
