Set Up Your Home Network, Windows 7 Edition

Here’s how you can get your Windows 7 PC to share printers and files with XP and Vista PCs--and even a Mac.

Zack Stern, PC World

With Windows 7, you can more easily share files and printers across a network via the new HomeGroups feature. HomeGroups lets you connect to files and printers with a group password--if all the PCs have Windows 7. But I'll show you how to get your Windows 7 PC to play nicely on a network that also has Macs and XP/Vista PCs.

network password

Hi

I am setting up a Windows 7 home premium network with 1 HTPC and 3 PCs

eg PC 1 with two HDDs (C:/D:) D: set to be shared with network. No passwords as far as I know, so why does W7 keep asking me for a password when I try to connect to PC1 from HTPC ?

Sorry but MS really jacked up the network on W7, There are 20+ threads here with people trying to get it to work right. W7 just doesn't share nicely with other computers unless Homegroup is activated, which kills access but computers not running W7. I have 3 machines (2 running W7) and can't get W7 to share anything other than what is in the public and recorded TV folders. Overall I really like W7, but the networking is a royal PITA.

That's not necessarily true. I have both Homegroup and workgroup running on five machines. Four are W7 and one is XP Home. The XP Home box does file and printer sharing (workgroup). In my case the XP box doesn't need to see the W7 machines. But the W7 systems see the XP machine and it's shares and printers with no problem.

I think it comes down to other issues and not *all* W7's fault.

Other issues? Far more obvious likely due to how things are configured. The one thing lackiing the article there that would be useful would be some troubleshooting steps. But that would easily take up about two more blogs pages.

If people are able to setup their home network just fine...it proves that Windows 7's networking works just fine...

It is normally a misconfiguration of a user...

These remarks do not help at all!
anyway i figured it out. I started with a clean W7 install and I noticed that W7 by default switches password protection on in network sharing.

it is working now but one needs to know what to look for as there is no wizard.

Strange problem

Hi, I am having the following problem:
I bought a laptop with win7 64bit. Connected to the PC without problems. Now I reinstalled the windows in both computers (on desktop I put 32 bit on laptop 64bit.).
From the desktop I can access the laptop files, but from the laptop can not. Anyone any ideas?
Thank you in advance
