Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This has been a quest!
I don't know how long this will last, but after 2 days of struggle I finally have my monitor's native resolution of 1680 x 1050 back. Turn's out (of course) that my display card is way out of date and there are no Windows 7 drivers – only Vista – and those are very erratic. Finally did find a workaround with a 2 part approach:

Use..

Drive Cleaner Pro (for free) from:
DCProSetup_15.zip - FTP Mirror Search (Downloads)
which removes all traces of the old drivers

Use this driver:
96.85_forceware_winvista_x86_international_whql.exe

Extract the driver but cancel the install

Then run

Mobility Modder from:
NVIDIA MobilityModder - HardwareHeaven.com

which modifies the older driver

Then install the driver, and – viola!

So we'll see how it goes...

You can also use the newer forceware 158.18 & 163.11 drivers as per here. It's surprising how well older gear runs Win7 Aero, even with only WDDM 1.0 support.
