Can I add back right click drive or folder to search?

In Win XP I used to be able to right click a drive or a folder /directory and it would bring up a menu of options, one of which would be to search for files or folders. Now with Win 7 I have to move my mouse all the way top the top right corner to be able to search. This is a lot of time and effort. It tires me out and is boring (LOL). Is there a way to add the search function back to the right click menu? I also liked the way the prior search options /filters were shown below (ie, date and size)

Hello TamborineMan,

Welcome to 7 Forums.

You can set it to automatically type in the search box for the open folder. In window explorer, Organize/Folder and Search Options/ View Tab. The selection is at the very bottom.

Hope this helps.

I tried your solution and I don't immediately see what it did. However, I did a internet search and came up with this info on a problem with Vista at the following link: Add Context Menu Search Back to Vista SP1 I tried this for Win 7 and I got my right click search menu option back. This involves a registry edit and as always there is a risk involved with doing that. I made a registry backup of this parameter and in any case, simply renamed it with a note that I did it. I guess if you use a third party search program this change may interfere with it. Here's a partial extract form the above website: Microsoft has recently published the KB 941946 article outlining changes to Windows Vista's desktop search in SP1. Windows Vista SP1 allows the user to change their default desktop search provider from the built-in Windows Desktop Search that ships with Windows Vista to another 3rd party desktop search provider. Windows Vista SP1 allows the user to change their default desktop search provider from the built-in Windows Desktop Search that ships with Windows Vista to another 3rd party desktop search provider. Because of Microsoft's effort to prevent a possible antitrust suit by the EU, the Search option has been removed from the right side of the Start menu. Users will also notice "See all results" has disappeared when doing a search via the Start menu. Instead, you will see "Search Everywhere". Search Everywhere will launch whatever is the user's default desktop search program. In Windows Explorer, users will also see a "Search Everywhere" option in the toolbar as well. Microsoft has updated the user interface elements that are listed in the following list: * The Search option on the right side of the Start menu is removed. * The See All Results option is changed to the Search Everywhere option. * The Search Everywhere option passes the search arguments that are typed in the text box to the default search application as defined by the user. Getting Search back to Vista's folder context and Start menu In order to get the search option back to Windows Explorer's and the Start menu context menu you will need to follow these steps: Warning! This document contains instructions for editing the registry. If you make any error while editing the registry, you can potentially cause Windows to fail or be unable to boot, requiring you to reinstall Windows. Edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the registry before making any changes. If you do not feel comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt these instructions. Instead, seek the help of a trained computer specialist.

In order for the folder options idea work, you have to first click in the rt. hand window in windows explorer. Then when you start typing, it will go into the search box at the top right.

Glad you found a way to get back what you wanted and Thanks for posting it here. :D

It doesn't exactly give me what i had or wanted, but it does show the "search" option in the right click menu regardless of whether I am in the left or the right windows explorer pane (except for the drive itself - that is, only for folders. but it does pop the cursor into the search parameter box and it seems to add a further filter: type of file. It does the main thing I wanted which is to quickly and easily move the cursor in the search box. I can live without the "back" or "search in more places", etc. options.
