Free space taking over HD

So i have just done a Brand new clean install of Windows 7. I formatted my Hard drive, so that i could have a back up drive with Windows 7. I have left over space and tryed adding it to Windows 7 Partiton, but it wont let me, So i download Partition Wizard, to try and get windows to take the space but no luck.

What have you tried? Resizing Win7 into the space with Partition Wizard? Did you Apply and have it reboot to do the resizing? Then what happened?

I've never seen Free Space before. Usually it's Unallocated space. Anyone know what it is and how to Resize a Win7 partition into Free space if it won't work with Partition WIzard?
 
Can you format that green space in Disk Management by right clicking on it?

I think that is just unallocated space within an extended partition. The OP doesn't need an extended partition.

You might need to create new volume with the Free space in order to delete it.

I remember now: this was a smaller free space yesterday that Partition Wizard refused to include in your Win7 partition resizing, right?

How did it grow that big?

Does anyone know what this Free Space is about?
 
Do you mean to say you want to merge free space from one partition to another? I think it's best to use a partition tool like Parition Magic.

That said their is a shrink volume option in Disk Management. But i haven't tried it that way.

i used the recommend disk space that way says and i get an error message saying,
there is enough enough space on this disk to complete this operation

The OP apparently made an extended partition with a logical drive for whatever reason. Then probably deleted the logical drive, leaving free space.

Did you or didn't you create a simple volume in that green space as you said you could 15 minutes ago?

He had another OS that he deleted and tried to recover the space into Win7.

The partitioning failed during reboot leaving original partitions hanging in the middle of the HD.

He resized Win7 back over to the first of the drive, and Backup over to the right where he wanted it.

Partition Wizard completed these tasks while leaving the strange Free Space at the end of the Win7 partition. When he attempts to recover it into Win7 using PWiz it grows each time.

These were Primary parts all along.

Do I have this right, Mitch?

Does anyone think this is failed partitioning that might need reimaging of HD with his Win7 backup image? I believe the image was taken before partitioning. Will check the old thread.
 
i dident because i use the space that it put in automatically, and i get error not enough space

I have no idea what you are trying to do.

If you are trying to get rid of the green space and let C take over that space, you can do that with the diskpart command.

But I am not going there in this thread.

I found this in the old thread from after you installed Win7, but before you deleted Vista and moved Win7 into that space.

I just notice that it was an extended partition where Vista was deleted and Backup was created. This might be causing the problem?

It isn't showing extended now, just Free Space.

Any suggestions?

Use Diskpart to clean Free Space as is? Then what do you suggest. Try extending Win7 again?
 
In Disk Management, rt click the Extended partition and select Delete:

DELETE-EXTENDED-2010-01-07_024122.jpg

You will then have Unallocated space on the right of the partition you wish to extend.

Rt click the partition you wish to extend and select how much.

SIW2 is here now looking at the thread.

Can he delete the Extended partition, create a new one for a new Backup Image and recover the rest into Win7?

He needs a primary part at the end of his drive for image (No external).

Can he save the image he's got somehow?
