How I can run the portable apps in windows XP Mode?

hi there,

how i can run the portable apps in windows xp mode, i think that i only put the portable app in e.g Program Files folder and the in close the xp mode a i want that this application appears in the windows 7 enviroment where is other normal instaled apps displayed. i know that is possible but i dont how to do it.

For portable apps, I assume they don't have complex registry settings. If so, you can simply install the apps to your windows 7 host. Then inside xp mode vm, you can simply click the executable files to launch them.

In your xp mode vm, you should see some shared drives, such as "C on host", here you can access host folders. For example, you can browse to host c:\program files (x86)\your app, then double click the exe to run it.

That would be interesting to take a look at here at some things!

There are some things like simply won't run on the XP Mode or on other VM wares there as well. It really depends on what type of portable apps. Another emulator like DOSBox simply fails when tried.

Interesting to know, might be to do with security permissions. Files in shared folders (xp mode) have different permissions than local files.

I will test DOSBox in VMLite. VMLite treats very differently on shared folder than Microsoft XP Mode. Those files shared are about same as local files. DOSBox might work if it's due to secuirty permissions.

I've also seen problems with DOSBox and other things when trying to run those on Virtual Box as well as the XP Mode itself. The drawback seems to be not being able to run any emulator inside an emulated or virtual environment since you are already in one.

I just tested DOSBox inside VMLite, the following is the screenshot. I am not familar with DOSBox, but seems to be runing ok. It's installed on host, then invoked from VMLite XP Mode vm, H:\c\program files\DOSBox-0.73

Also not sure whether it's due to 0.73 vs your version.

You'll notice the default "Z" drive seen at the dos like prompt there. In DBox you first enter "Mount C: C:\program folder" for whatever old dos app and press enter to watch C mounted in a virtual dos environment there. From there you type C: and press enter to change to C on DB and simply type the name of the executable to watch!

Here's one example of how a real old 8bit dos game one of first 1st person shooter games looks on DB being run on the 64bit 7 and even now you hear that through 5.1 surround over a board beep speaker on an old I386 museum piece!

will test more, but the first screens of DOSBox running are different in VMLite and Microsoft XP Mode, so VMLite seems to go a few more steps.

I'll be looking into VMLite there to see how far I get as well. Likely no sound however! :cry:

That's seems to be typical with alternates to the XP Mode or running Windows on a vhd as seen with the RCs.

by "running Windows on a vhd ", do you mean there is some limitations if you boot Windows 7 from a VHD? DOSBox will have issues on such environment?

Off topic: the screenshot I showed is actually XP Mode booted from an XP VHD inside a vm (with another vm VHD that has no OS, as I am testing our VBoot products).

When simply creating a new vhd for the Windows Virtual PC which was done previously the 32bit RC the retail 32bit 7 ran right into a snag there. No detection of the ISP for activation as well as nothing but the bare basic default vga drivers.

98 on VBox was far worse however for display limited to 16 colors! Forget sound for either while the previous RC on vhd was able to use the shared virtual sound card. The 32bit retail not working with the virtual ethernet adapter was a concern there however.

ok, thanks for the info, so it's mainly due to lack of drivers, rather then something inherent to VHD native boot.

For the 98 effort there the lack of drivers becomes obvious plus just how outdated 98 is to begin with never being intended to work with any virtual environment to start with. We can accept that one fast there.

For the retail 7 install nothing works for seeing a working IE connection while the same method was used on the 32bit RC which detected the active connection there instantly. The device menager still shows everything is working properly however but simply doesn't work?!

i have solved my problem. simply copy the app where you want in xp mode and then create a shorcut to main EXE file and move it to all users profile start menu, so it will show in windows 7
