as per THIS thread over at the other forum. Has anyone heard anything about the (faint) possibility of Vista doing the same to Windows 7 restore points in a multi-boot scenario?

I have successfully hidden my Vista and Windows 7 partitions from both of my XP ones, but am wondering if I should do the same for Vista vis-à-vis Windows 7 ?

Hi Peter,

I think Microsoft has already implemented that tutorial in Windows 7. For me, none of my Windows 7 installations (32-bit and 64-bit) can see the Vista partitions. Windows 7 can only see other Windows 7 partitions. However, Vista can see Windows 7. This seems to act the same way as in the tutorial, except substitute XP with Windows 7.

I do not know if Windows 7 could see XP though.

I can see my Vista and both of my XP partitions with no problems.

Until someone proves otherwise I've done the same type of registry edit in my Vista partition, just in case.

I can also see all my other partitions from "7". But I am not sure when this occured as I have been customising heavily (again!).
The only reason they are invisible, I believe, is because they have not been allocated letter designates. Thsi was once mentioned in a Microsoft comment as ththeir new reccomendation to give names to aprtitions rather than hard disk letters. Follwing that policy, I would now describe this as a "bug" in "7" and have posted as such.
To regain sight of the other partitions, I went to Disk management and gave the other partitions letters (They were all visible under disk management). They were then again visible in the Windows Explorer.
It would be interesting, however, to know if Ex-Brit's other partitions were visible from installation?
Fwiw. I think that is a wise precation, Ex-Brit, I don't think the fact that they are invisible, neccessarily means they cannot be accessed by "7".

Yes they were. I installed W7 from my C: drive which is XP and all the partitions were available for me to pick where to install it.

My question remains, however, is there any evidence of Vista wiping W7 restore points in a double-boot environment?

I suppose the only way to know for sure is to try it with Windows 7 not hidden from Vista like XP was in the tutorial. If it deletes them, then just hide Windows 7, and manually create another restore point in Vista to have one again.

I do not think this will be a issue though since Windows 7 seems to be almost the same as Vista and not XP.

Ive been dualbooting with Vista and Windows 7 (6801) for the last three weeks and Win7/Vista restore points dont get wiped...You can safely use both on separate partitions

There we have confirmation....thanks. I will now unhide W7 from Vista and see what transpires.
I'll leave it hidden from XP though as I assume W7 would have the same issue as Vista does with it.

Saw this thread last night, so booted Vista this morning. I just checked for Vista restore points. They were all gone.

I had to give W7 a drive letter to see the Vista OS partition when I installed. May have to undo that. Created another and will boot into 7 and back to Vista later and see if the one I just created gets wiped. When I shutdown last night, all of seven's restore points were listed.

Update:Created a couple restore points in Vista this morning and then booted 7. Played around some, put it to sleep while I went out for awhile. Played around somemore and checked Vista and they are still there. Must of been something I done.

can't imagine how that could happen.

Sorry to regurgitate this thread after so long, but rather than create a new one on exactly the same subject I thought it best to do it this way.

My Windows 7, despite having 15% of the 116gb HD it's installed on set for restore points, seems only capable of holding the last restore point.

I've double-checked my multi-boot XP's and they are both set in the registry to hide this partition as per the registry hack published in the Vista forums.

I know that Vista isn't supposed to "eat it's young" à la XP but I'm wondering if, in fact, it not only can, but is actually doing that?

I hadn't previously hidden Windows 7 from Vista but now have to test my theory.

If I'm wrong then please correct me, as there must be some other reason as to why I never have more than the most recent restore point. I'm not cleaning them out myself.

As a test I've also increased the allocation to 30% of the HDD.

Hi Peter,

I am dual booting Vista x64 and 7100x64.

They are visible to each other. No problem with the restore points.

Perhaps I was blaming the wrong thing then. I've upped the % to use for Restore points to 30, maybe that will fix it.

Hi Peter,

It has been confirmed that dual booting with Vista and Windows 7 will not wipe each other's restore points out unlike if you dual booted one of them with XP.

You might also check to see if you have any 3rd party utlitity type programs set to clean restore points other than using Disk Cleanup.

Please let us know if increasing it to 30% helped.

Hello Peter.

You and I have been through some of this before about XP and 7 over at x64, I've had every build of Windows 7 from the beginning visible to Vista and vice-versa, and I have never had any issues with 7 messing with Vista or Vista messing with 7.

That was a problem in earlier builds -- The XP partition wasn't assigned a Drive letter by Windows 7 and remained "Hidden". XP however was always able to see the W7 partition.

In RC (7100) this has been fixed -- no probs.
