Why did chkdsk run?

1 Minute Ago I installed Windows 7. I went to windows update and installed all the important updates and one optional update related to the intel chipset in my computer. I rebooted after the updates were installed, successfully according to Windows. What happens when I reboot? Chkdsk runs. Why? The only other things I had installed were Microsoft Secrity Essentials and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware. Something is not right.

Why?? who knows, but it should only run once, and then you should be ok....

Its really anything to be worried about, I've had chkdsk run on me when I never told it to (mainly if I install something like Linux with a Wubi like application).

I agree with the two prior posters. You may just want to go to task scheduler and see if there is any schedule for chkdsk. There are none on my scheduler.

I hope you are right. This is the third time I have tried installing Windows 7. the last time I was constantly getting messages about corrupt files and to run chkdsk /r. I would do this but the problems kept happening. It would even wipe out my settings in my email program. So I decided to do another install and when chkdsk ran when the only thing I had done was update Windows it made me nervous.

Hi and welcome

If you are getting chkdsk on several iinstalls I suspect your HD is going bad. Go to the mfr's site and download their diagnostic tool to be sure

It is a brand new hard drive. I don't have any problems when I run XP on a different partition.

Just to point out, even a new hard drive, can be defective or going bad.

I suggest doing what Ken suggested. :p

I downloaded the diagnostic tool from Intel and ran a full scan on both partitions and they both came back without errors.

Well it is happening again I have over 1300 errors in event viewer in both the application log and security log. In the application log they are mostly:
Source: ESENT
Event ID: 455
Task Category: Login/Recovery
In the system log they are mostly
Source:Ntf
Event ID: 55
Task Category: 55 (2)
I tried to take a screen shot but when I tried to save it I was todl "disk structure corrupted and unreadable"
Any thoughts?

Manually run chkdsk, right click your drive, select properties, tools, choose check now, tick both boxes and reboot. Also, run the short dst test in seagate seatools.

you would be right. chkdsk is forced to run when windows is not happy with the file allocation table. if you are rerunning windows make sure you wipe the drive / partition at least 3 times.

I don't have a Seagate Hard drive. I ran the diagnostics for my hard drive and it reported no errors.
The last time I formatted the partition I only had it overwrite twice. So it needs at least three overwrites?

Seatools works for internal hard drivers - run the pass.

It may have been the TRIM Windows update for your SSD. You should go to intel site Here and run the firmware update tool to make sure your SSD is up to date. Some of the intel SSD's have errors with TRIM and other firmware issues, so making sure your firmware is up to date will eliminate some of those issues and give us a better idea of the problem.

Sounds like the diagnostic tools listed here are for conventional HDD's. You should run the Intel SSD Toolbox for your SSD after updating your firmware if you are still having issues.
