W7 notebook shuts off randomly when on external monitor

Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum, and I'm looking forward to meeting and greeting, as well as solving my issue. I consider myself fairly computer savvy, but have been unable to tackle this problem. My specs are posted. Here goes:

I've installed W7 Ultimate 64 bit on my notebook, and often use it connected to an external monitor. The monitor in question is a Samsung 216bw LCD at 1680x1050 and connected via HDMI/DVI cord (HDMI out on notebook and DVI in on monitor). I am using a ATI Mobility Radeon HD4650 card.

My notebook turns off randomly when connected to this monitor. It used to turn off randomly when on the notebook monitor also after being idle for a bit, but I fixed this with different power settings. It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing - anything from internet browsing to games. When it shuts off, I do not get a BSOD, a shut down warning, or anything - it simply turns off like it lost power. I have to turn it back on manually, but have never had problems with it turning back on. It asks me if I want to boot into safe mode, and after I choose it will boot like nothing ever happened.

The only thing in the event viewer is the "Kernel Power" and "6008 event" errors that notify me that it shut off, but it doesn't give me more info to go off of. All of the bug checks are 0x0.

I am dual booting with Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, and have never had a problem with my notebook in Ubuntu regardless of the monitor being used, leading me to think this is a W7 problem. I also recently did a clean install of 7 and the problem still persists.

Things I have tried: Using various ATI drivers (even the desktop ones with Mobility Modder), running memory test, running HDD test, monitoring CPU and GPU temps. Nothing has seemed to make a difference.

So, I am asking you, my new internet friends, to help me out here. I've searched this forum high and low before posting, and have found similar issues, but none quite like this. Any help you can provide would be wonderful. I can provide more info/system specs if needed also. Thanks!

I've turned off all of the sleep/hibernate functions, so I don't think this is the issue. Any other ideas?
