Hi, Here is the problem:
I open my USB drive from My Computer, add a new folder, right click it and select rename. after typing the new name, i hit wnter, then, Wham!!, W7 shuts down and reboots. This is hapening with all USB drives I put into the PC. Have I missed a setting or something in W7 that might be causing this?

When I whack the USB into my old PC running XP, no problems, I can add, rename folders no problem at all. Just W7 won't do it.

Your help is greatly appreciaited.

Cheers.

Before plugging your USB (or another mobile devices), scanning for virus is necessary. :D

It could be the above mentioned issues....
Could be bad USB Ports on the PC, or drivers, or corrupt OS.
Since you have tested without issue on another PC,,, then

If this is happening too all USB devices,,, then I am pointing to Bad USB ports.

Running Additonal Antivirus programs.

hi guys, I appreciate that. I'll download those antivirus programs and run a scan.

A questions though: are these programs likely to clash with Trend Micro which is currently running on my system? Or would I just swich Trend Mcro off while I run the others?

Also, if my ports are corrupted, do i just reistall W7?

I have Microsoft emailing me to try and solve this but no luck on our first trial. thanks guys. DR.

Keep in mind that is never a good idea to install more than one AV at a time.
Even if one is disabled.

If the USB Ports are bad, this is a hardware issue that can only be resolved by replacing the motherboard or if it is a USB add on card, replacing that.

You can attempt to see if this is an OS issue by reloading the OS, which is a good idea to eliminate it as the issue, as that is cheaper than replacing the motherboard.

However,,, generally this is never an OS issue, but stranger things have happened, so I personally would start with reloading the OS and start from scratch, if the problem continues,, you can be pretty sure it's bad USB ports.
