Windows 7 Nvidia Driver Installation Problem

i want to manually install the newest nvidia display driver on my system. problem is, after i uninstall old driver and reboot, windows automatically installs (within seconds) a wddm display driver that i'm assuming is already stored in some windows folder somewhere on my box. I believe this driver is included in windows 7. this driver is an older driver and i cannot access the nvidia control panel with it. i've googled 'preventing automatic install of drivers' and various other terms and they all point to 'turning off auto windows updates' . this isn't the solution. how the hell can i prevent windows from installing anything but a generic vga display driver, or prompting me with a few options of what to do? thanx very much.

Don't worry about the newly installed default driver. Just install the new nvidia drivers. You'll then have everything you need.

they wouldn't install over the wddm driver, it said something along the lines of 'no modification has been made...etc' during the install process.

use Driver Sweeper to first get rid of the drivers you have. Read the instructions. Phyxion.net | Home

You might try uninstalling the drivers from Device Manager. I believe it will ask you if you want to delete the drivers from your hard drive. Reply yes. Then run drive sweeper in safe mode.

i've always used it the way the instructions state. uninstall drivers via control panel 'programs and features', reboot into safe mode, run driver cleaner, reboot...this is where the automatic driver install happens. i've been directed to a possible solution by a member in another forum, but i will have to wait till tomorrow morn to give it a shot. i'll post back with any solution/continuing problem thanx.

I do it the same way as you but I am always able to install the nvidia drivers over the default ones. Don't know why you can't also. Good luck.

ok cool. thanx, i'll also download another install package in case the previous one was corrupt in some way. like i said, i'll report back.

this was the solution to my problem, thank you man.

for clarification to anyone else that is having this problem,

1. go into device manager,
2. right click on your display card,
3. choose properties,
4. go to 'driver' tab,
5. choose update driver,
6. choose 'browse my computer for driver software',
7. choose 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer',
8. double click 'standard vga graphics driver' and wait for install
9. uninstall nvidia driver from 'programs and features'
10. reboot into safe mode and run driver cleaner if you wish,
11. reboot, now windows will recognize that there is a standard vga driver installed and will NOT attempt to install the WDDM one.
12. install new driver per norm.
