Installing printer via Ethernet Cable

NinaJay

better days ahead
Silly question maybe but is there anyway to use an ethernet cable to directly connect my printer to my computer or is there no such thing?

I have an older printer which has no USB connection. My new computer also does not have the old style printer port which is required for this printer.

My printer does however have an ethernet port and I was wondering if there is anyway to connect directly to my computer using an ethernet cable.

I realise I can connect my printer to my router but this sits on the otherside of my house and it is not practical for me to have my printer so far from my computer.

Am I making sense?

Thanks in advance :D

Edit: I currently have a new canon connected but I managed to get this monster of a HP from work for nothing and it is so economical. The toner just keeps going and going (ie. work used it daily for 5 years and only replaced the toner ONCE). My canon is so thirsty that I spend more on ink than I did on the original printer!

To put the printer near the computer, you can probably purchase a wireless print server. I doubt that this would give you the best bang for the buck.

Hmmm, I suspected it couldn't be done. Will just have to bite the bullet and put my printer near my router which is more a pain because of the lack of room near my router (ie, it's beside the pantry/kitchen/dining table). I only have one phone connection into my house, hence the limited options :(

I would FAX it to you, but that is why the account gave it to me, printer part works great, but Fax crashes the whole unit & you have to unplug power & reset everything.

You never really answered the question: How to use an ethernet cable to connect a printer directly to a laptop. Can it be done? Can you simply use a crossover cable and set up a new port?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Professional 64bit
This is an old one, but yes... you can connect directly to the printer with a cross-over if you like. Some printers will even auto sense and you can use a regular patch cable, but definitely a crossover will work.

My Computer

Computer Manufacturer/Model Number
Acer Ferrari One/HP Proliant Microserver/Random Monstrosities
OS
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 OEM
Can I get more details:

Step one - Use the Printer menu to determine the current IP Address.
Step two - Determine what IP address you want to use. I understand that you need to use a subnet to avoid any conflicts with your existing network. For example, my network is set up with 192.168.1.xxxx where the xxxx up to 50 is fixed IP addresses and the rest are dynamically assigned. As I understand it, you have to assign the printer an address of 192.168.50.1 to create a new .50 subnet.
Step three - Use Add Printer after changing the IP address and use Search Local Network to get the software to find the printer.
Step four - I have no idea how you tell the client computer to use the subnet for this connection.

All of this should be done after plugging in an Internet crossover cable.

Can anyone flesh out the details to be more specifc when you define the Port and the IP address of both the printer and the computer so they will find each other?
