Ok, here's a few methods to delete the icons. Let me know if any worked for you? :)

1. Refresh the desktop and see if you can now delete them.

2. Boot in safe mode and try deleting them.

3. Go to the desktop folder/s and try deleting from there. The typical path is C:\Users\UserName\Desktop or C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

4. Use freeware Delete Doctor utility to lock and delete them on reboot.

5. If they are leftover icons after un-installing a program, install the program again, delete the desktop icons and then uninstall the program.

6. Open Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
Double click on NameSpace and check inside each of the GUID folders. If you are able to identify the icon by name, delete it. This is esp useful for deleting some un-deletable system icons.

7. Open cmd, use syntax RD /S /Q “pathname” where:
/S : Delete all files and subfolders in addition to the folder itself. Use this to remove an entire folder tree.
/Q : Quiet – do not display YN confirmation
Use these keys depending on your need.

Here is a post with exactly the same problem I am facing. The poster was able to find and delete the file in 32bit Win 7 but not 64. He used lockhunter, but was not successful in Win 64. Everything I do is without success as the file is reported as not there.

"These problem files only come when getting torrent files (trackers), which I think originate from torrenstworld.net site.
Btw, using the command prompt (even booting in Safe Mode or administrator mode) as I have seen someone suggest does not work ... it's the first action I tried by myself without any reference whatsoever (as I have intermediate knowledge of [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]PCs[/COLOR][/COLOR], commands and processes; you can say I'm IT-savvy) when the problem first cropped up"

Can i know what type of file/icon are you trying to delete? If possible, a screenshot of it? Is it associated with any programs? Did any of the above methods worked out for you?

The reg location did not reveal any icons just items like recycle bin?
Code:
6. Open Regedit and navigate to
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
Double click on [I]NameSpace[/I] and check inside each of the GUID folders. If you are able to identify the icon by name, delete it. This is esp useful for deleting some un-deletable system icons.
Did you go through all the GUID folders and find the icon by name?

If I read your post to a link correctly you need to delete a torrent file that is named in such a way that Windows 64bit cannot delete it but Windows 32bit can? Or is it more that Windows XP can delete it and Windows 7 cannot.

You can delete the desktop file/icon by opening the Command Prompt.
You will need to change "file name" with the first part of your file name.

With the Command Prompt open navigating to the desktop.

cd %USERPROFILE%\desktop
attrib -r -s -h "file name"*.*
del "file name"*.*

That should delete your desktop icon.

This just worked, but unfortunately I deleted everything else on my desktop

From a command prompt and after navigating to the desktop folder I typed del *.tor then hit "Y" for yes when asked. Would you happen to know where all the deleted files went?
