Home vs Unidentified Network - but connects OK

Hi all

I searched the groups, read the how-tos, found things that seemed to help on the below, but had no luck finding exactly my problem or a solution. Tried a few ideas. Apologies if I duplicate. Here's my issue - have I a security problem and/or bad network setup?

I have a new laptop (Acer Aspire media) and connected to Belkin N+ router (using router DHCP). Windows 7 Home Premium, Atheros wireless card. All drivers bang up to date and Win updates also. Router on newest firmware. I can connect to router and Internet with no obvious problem.

My wireless networks show 2 networks: Home, and an "Unidentified Wireless Network" that appears to be Public. BUT the Unidentified WN happens also to be my home - details are the same and security is in place. I have tried merging, deleting - can't do it. I did manage to delete it in "Manage Wireless Networks" but restart showed limited connection to my home network until this public one reappeared. I see from the group there has been a Win 7 bug or problem with this.

I'm not techie - I am worried this might be a security vulnerability. I can connect to the Internet OK so there are no connection issues. But when I run diagnostics I'm told I have a wireless problem and am connected to multiple networks. So just what is this parallel network? Should I worry?

Screen shot jpeg attached.

Grateful for help. Thanks, Clive

Hi Chev65

Thank you for the link. I had not discovered this page. I had a read and went to try this out but found the gateway information is in the IPv4 settings OK. So it looks like this is not the answer for me though I'll check and recheck. I only get the limited connection until the mystery public connection appears then I connect OK.

Thank you for taking the time to point me in this direction.

Clive

Hi Chev65

Resolved!

AHA! I checked and rechecked after your kind suggestion (and after reading the link), and dug down into the IPv4 settings. And then I found that I am true to my user name: Hapless. Poor dumb idiot I am, in my earlier struggles to get an older router to work I'd LEFT an incorrect second I.P gateway address lurking forgotten in the adaptor settings.. Even though everything pointed to the correct default gateway, this leftover broken address still threw the spanner in the works! Removed it and problem now resolved.

Thanks for your help - it got me thinking and looking in the right sort of places!

Clive
