The only other thing I can think of is to download the windows seven driver from the Pixima MP780 link above. Unpack if needed..stop>Go to device manager (provided your printer is reconized) right click on the printer>update software>browse my computer> let me pick>Have disk>browse>navigate to the folder with the driver in it>click or (double click the .inf file>hit ok> then let it install from their, if it compalins about not being signed click let it install anyways. You may also want to download the quick start guide and read it. With some printers it requires you to start the installation then when prompted connect the USB cable and trun on he printer. You may be able to install the setup.exe file by just using the normal method if this is required. It seems like something is being overlooked since others have had success with this. Good luck. I can get my printer to work if it is connected to my Windows 7 64 bit laptop, and it can print from my XP 32 bit PC, but I cannot get my laptop to print over the network to my XP PC, with a message saying that I do not have the proper driver.
Am I supposed to install a 32 bit XP driver on my laptop, or can't my 32 bit PC that connects to the printer handle that? I don't want to corrupt my laptop 64 bit Windows 7 driver by installing a 32 bit XP over it.

UPDATE: I think this problem was finally solved at this thread: http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/4085-canon-mp780-driver-install.html

I too have the laptop Windows 7/desktop Windows XP printer dilema. My laptop uses the same wireless network that my desktop does and my MP780 is hardwired to my desktop via a USB port. Did this problem get solved and if so, how?

i spent two hours on the telephone with Canon technical support, which was actually pretty impressive. They were knowledgeable, and escalated to level 2 support, rather than blow me off.

The Bottom Line: No one was able to get the MP780 to work on Windows 7 64 bit OS. The rep finally said that I should probably consider getting a newer wireless printer, as they get those networked all the time, no problem. For all the time that I spent trying to get the MP780 to network, I had probably spent 5-10 hours. I just bought the MX870 printer, and it is a good printer that networked fairly easily. Quit trying, use it as backup, and get a new printer. It will save you some time, as the MP780 just won't work.
