Help me in partitioning my hard drive :)

Hello Guys, I am new to this forum. I have recently ordered a Dell Studio XPS 16 '' lappy :D
But the problem is that it comes with only 2 partitions one C and other one hidden. The C drive is almost 450 GB in size ( as on my friends Dell ) and the hidden partition is 15 GB. What I want to do is to delete the hidden partition and create 1 primary partition of 65 GB to load windows and 3 logical partitions of sizes 60GB, 170 GB, 170 GB respectievly. I am not sure how to do it although I checked the brilliant tutorial provided I could not make it out
Please help me guys.
I also want to know one thing, how to make primary and logical partitions?
Does fotmatting unallocated space create primary and shrinking a drive creates logical?
Thanks in advance.

Before deleting the hidden partition you should create your backup discs or buy some from Dell. Instead of sending a DVD with every computer, manufacturers are now having a dedicated small portion of your hard drive to restore the computer to factory settings. They also will have a program to burn the contents of the partition, so you can burn a disk. It is only 15 gig or so, so I would recommend leaving the partition there. Maybe buy an external drive if more space is needed. Windows 7 has a built in partitioning program or you could download one of several free ones.

This may help you : Partition Wizard Bootable CD Review and Download,Boot CD,File & Disk Software
Its a bootable cd. So burn it in a cd, and boot from it. Then you will be able to do partitions.

Though I use Acronis to manage my partition, but its not free.

Thanks, but can't I do it during fresh Windows Installation? I will prefer that method :sarc:

Friends please help me ;-(

Obviously! In time of fresh installation, you can do it. But then you may have to format your drive, so all data will be lost. So First go for a backup.

If you plan for a fresh installation, then how can I help you? Dont you know how to install? Then you may see it :http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html?ltr=C . In step 8, you will have the partition ("new" button, having a yellow asterix in front of it) option.

Fitst, Read the tutorial carefully. Then, if you think, you may delete the two partitions (while you are in step 8, select a partition and press the delete button, one by one; be careful, the 15 gb is the recovery sector, if you dont need it, you may delete it). now you will see the entire hard disk empty.
now press the new button, give the size as per your requirement, press enter to accept it, and proceed upto your partition requirement fullfils, the first partition , that is "c" fprmat it, install windows here. Hope it helps.

Arc, you are awsome ! ! !

For example, you may set c to 50 gb, d to 80 gb, e to 100 gb, and so on......:)

So first I will delete both the partitions. Then I will click new and enter 66560 MB ( That is my C drive of 65 GB ), then again selecting the unallocated space I will click new, and enter 61440MB or 60GB, that is my D drive. Then again I will select the Unallocated space and click new and enter 174080MB or 170GB my E drive. I will repeat the last step again to create my F drive. Then I will format all the drives and install windows in C.
Now Arc, please tell me will C be primary and others logical? What does primary and logical mean. And also how can I avoid making that Windows 7 100MB Partition?
Do correct my method if wrong. Reply soon Arc.

Hi great poster,
thanks, but please dont reveal the rep infos in public in this forum (please see "Reputation and Badge" thread in Chillout room). Sorry for late, I was a bit busy :)
First, While partitioning using windows 7 installation disc, you will see all the partitions dark blue in disk management, that means all they are primary. I dont know how to make them logical using windows 7 installation dvd, but Acronis disk director does it nicely (I use it to manage my partitions).

About your quarries regarding partitions, please read the links 1.Primary, Extended and Logical Partitions, and 2.Volume Boot Sectors, it is too large to answer here.

Third, there is a nice tutorial regarding not making the system reserved partition while installing windows 7. The link is : How to Avoid 200MB Hidden System Partition From Been Created During Windows 7 Installation My Digital Life. Though I maintain the 100mb system reserved partition.

Sorry Arc, I did not know the rules. However, you did a great job !!!
I have planned my way, I will first make the C partition with all 465 GB and then after installing Windows, use the disk management tool to partition it logically. I read the links and they are so informative. THANKS A LOOO.....infinite loop.......T Arc.

At least create the c partition (65 gb, as per your need). Otherwise (I think) the disk management does not have any option to create new partitions. After installing Windows in c, you may create partitions in the rest part of the unpartitioned disk.

If a partition is formatted disk management fails to create a new partition from it. So as per your plan, you will not be able to do do partitions after installations. Then you may follow one of the two alternatives :
1. Create C partition(65 gb, as per your need), Install windows in it, after installation make partition in the unpartitioned place using disk management.

2.Proceed as per your plan, Download free partition wizard live cd (a small .iso will be downloaded, you are to burn it in a disk) , make partitions booting from the partition wizard cd.

Have success ..... best of luck :)

Slow Down and read what's being said to you

Thanks, but can't I do it during fresh Windows Installation? I will prefer that method :sarc:
Plese help Arc see my above reply. I will be relly greatful dude:cry:

Mate you need to slow down abit and read up a little, there is a wealth of informatation available to you,
Like everything in life, you need to understand what you want and need, so i'd suggest that prior to formatting your harddrive, be sure that you understand what you need to do,

When carrying out a clean install you will be given the option of where you want that instillation to go, this is where you can delete and partition your hard drive,

You say currently that you have 2 partitions / so delete them / then it will allow you to create new partition for you system install,

At this point you may not be given a choice to partition further with wins 7? - If that being the case, you can partition further once you have installed the new opps software, then from windows management console, which can be found via start/control panel/ administrative tools/computer managent/storage.

Unlike previous versions of windows, wins 7 create's a hidden partition which is 100mbs - so leave this alone,

Arc has given you some software and sound advice - be sure that you are clear in what needs to be done before atemping and print off the tutorial on clean install with the link that he gave you,

And good luck,

Hey Guys, I think I read in PC World that even after I use the whole space I can still shrink the partition and make one extended partition in which I can go with my idea of creating 3 logical partitions. Correct me if I am wrong dude. Also do tell me does the partitions created during Win7 installations are primary or Logical, if I create them?
