Geeks and IT Pros often have to burn an ISO image (.iso file) to physical media such as a CD or DVD to test out and install software. We have made it easier to burn ISO images in Windows 7 by natively supporting the ability to burn ISO images directly within Windows without the need of a third party tool.

To burn an ISO image in Windows 7, all someone needs to do is simply right-click on an ISO image and choose “Burn disc image”.

This launches Windows Disc Image Burner, giving you the option to burn the ISO image to either a CD or DVD.

If you check “Verify disc after burning”, it will verify the ISO image burned correctly. Choosing to verify a disc you burned will require additional time so if you’re in a hurry, you will probably want to ensure this option is unchecked.

I often burn ISO images to a DVD-RW so I can re-use the media. What’s great about Windows Disc Image Burner is that it will detect that a DVD-RW has content on it already and prompt you asking if you would like to erase the disc and burn new content to it. This ensures you don’t accidently erase and burn over something important that may be on that DVD-RW disc. This is awesome because it lets me re-use DVD-RW media.

If you haven’t already discovered this feature in the Windows 7 Beta, you should give it a shot especially if you are burning ISO images quite a bit.

That was seen in the 7000 build as well as anything newer but not available there. This will be the first version that natively supports iso images which will be another inviting item seen in 7 there.

I call it the craptop.
I use it to burn my windows 7 builds, would be nice if they had some speed control though.

Imgburn is where its at! I, too, tone down the burn speed when I want to assure a solid dvd. Works every time!

+5 - every build since 6801 that I have burned to disc I used that utility as well. Works like a champ.

I always use Imgburn, never had a bad burn (because I use 4x)
The Official ImgBurn Website

Good over all for multiple formats, but I cannot wait for 4X burning - I use the native utility for ISOs....

I use that if I'm lazy and don't want to start up the main gui for :: RocketDivision :: CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD recording and mastering

The free version supports a bit more then just burning iso images like data dvds and video files. I use that for seeing GParted and live Linux cds burned since that's also far less bloasted then Roxio and other programs. That's an option if you are not able to get your usual burning software to run and want to burn other types other then dvds for 7.

I had this in Build 6801. This news is so late it's not even funny.

The feature was there in the early stages while not actually seeing the full support at rhe time with it not being enabled by default. That was something I was hearing from a tester at the time.

With the newer builds you expect to see that improved and more readily available for use. Another thing to point out as well is not everyone knows that 7 now sees this type of support since it wasn't seen in Vista or XP.

I use Imgburn on my Vista installation but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoy the native ability to burn in 7. I first tried it in 6801 and it was a little buggy but since beta I've not had any issues. I've burned normal files and plenty of ISO's successfully (even added files to an existing burn without a problem.)

I would like more options, who wouldn't? But for straight burning it works really well and doesn't require you to install yet another application.

It's certainly a convenient option being seen without question. For iso images you won't have to go out and buy or download and 3rd party program for a simple one time burn of something!

For other types of burns however then you still will have to look at 3rd party stuff there depending on how involved that is. For data data disks as well as burning iso images one example of how that works can be seen in the example here.

In the image I simply viewed the files on the same disk drive that they would be sent to for illustration there. With 7 of course you now simply iso to the types of files that can be burned with a tool included in Windows.

The idea of a good solid burn on removable media is one way to safeguard against loss if a drive fails or some virus gets loose and the drive ends up being wiped. Or you might go to deleted one thing and delete something else by mistake. At least you have a hard copy backup like you would see with any data dvd burned.

+5 - every build since 6801 that I have burned to disc I used that utility as well. Works like a champ.

Good over all for multiple formats, but I cannot wait for 4X burning - I use the native utility for ISOs....

What raises my hackles up over these sort of programs is that they advertise themselves as 100% FREE and then you only find out afterwards that the bits you actually want to use have to be PAID FOR.

If they were honest up front I'd probably purchase a copy but the free version has such limited use that I won't bother.

I DO HATE this type of sell -- download something for free -- but if you REALLY want to perform a task you are interested in then "Upgrade to the PRO version".

At least with UltraISO you know exactly what you are getting and it CAN do DVD images from Commercial DVD's without problems.

No thanks.

The Windows built in ISO burner seems a good idea -- but again Microsoft why hobble it -- just adding a few features so you could COMPILE an ISO as well would be great.

I'm sick of NERO now --it's just BLOATWARE. The old command line Linux program is also good (and free) -- makeisofs but it has a CLI (I don't mind CLI's but I know most are probably more confortable with a GUI. You can use makeisofs in windows as well using Bartpe tools .

I would rather see the ability to mount an iso file without having to burn it. I never burn CD/DVD.

With Windows 7 you can create Virtual Hard Disks and copy the files needed to the newly created drive. It's slower than mounting a drive but the option is there, and it's quite good too.

The native burning of ISO files is a very welcome feature and worked for me on 7068 flawlessly, allowing me to create my 7077 disk.
