Mic Problem (Conexant HD Smart Audio 221)

Hi, Ive been looking for a solution for so long ! Looked everywhere and no answers so i am posting here. My problem is that when i plug in an external mic, it does not work but the internal mic does work.

I am running

HP G60-348CA
Windows 7
Conexant HD Smart Audio 221 (Date released: 09-2009 / Version: 4.98.4.60 A)

It's 2011 and this problem still hasn't been fixed. I have Windows 7 64 Bit and Conexant Smart Audio HD Audio Drivers with the following versions:

Codec Version: CX20583
Audio Driver Version 4.98.60.50
HD Audio API Version 1.0.32.0
Smart Audio Version 6.0.44.0

Conexant Systems haven't done anything to fix the problem yet and I'm heated about it.
