Firefox causes high cpu and ram usage

I have Firefox 3.6 installed with a bunch of add-ons for I don't know how long by now,but from maybe month and a half before I have experienced some new joys with it.It started just occasssionally, but now,it is almost regular that when I exit Firefox,Firefox.exe process remains running in task manager, and consuming up to 50-60% of cpu,and even almost a GB of RAM(and sometimes, there is even no this "almost",it goes way over).
I used to have problems with lagging every few seconds when running Firefox, and after few reinstalls,I get used to that and accepted it as unsolvable, but now I am thinking about trying Opera.
I am running Firefox 3.6,and about maybe 30 or so add-ons,and I think they are all necessary how much I am addicted to them.
So basically what is happening?
When I run it(Firefox),ram usage jumps to few hundreds MB for only few tabs, and after I close them all but one,I noticed that while cpu usage falls under 10% of usage, ram never falls down under cca 700mb.OK,that wouldn't be a problem, but CPU usage starts to jump from 3 or 5% all the way up to 60-70% altough only one tab with hompeage Google is open, and with usual lagging of Firefox on which I am used already it is causing major lagging problem, and PC is almost unusable. When I try to exit it,OK,I am out,but CPU still jumps up-down,and I have to manually shutdown Firefox.exe process in task manager.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall all add-ons,one by one,but nothing changed.
Does anybody have a clue what coul possibly help me so I don't have to change to Opera because I simply love Firefox with his add-ons(altough,I hear Opera is making wonderfull progress on that field).
Thank you all on reading, and I am sorry on my bad english but I hope you have understood what is my problem.
Cheers

Well Firefox is prone to memory leaks and will consume a lot of RAM after a short period of browsing. Also, if you have a lot of addons, you can expect a lot of memory to be consumed. Uninstall any addons you don't use.

Then hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE inside of Firefox and clear the cache.

Does that help?

I think it's important not to get carried away with add-ons; I use them sparingly -- I have 3/4.

I had the same issue; are you running x86 or X64? If X64 , try minefield. Flash isn't supported Which is good because I believe that is what hogs the memory.

I've used Firefox for over 10 years until a couple months ago when I finally switched to Google Chrome. I must say I don't miss Firefox at all. Google uses much less memory and in my opinion it's much faster then Firefox.

I have 16 extensions installed in Firefox 3.6.3 (standard 32bit version) and I have no issues at all.

It essentially uses 1% CPU unless I am playing a Video or something. Memory, I am at about 100Megs with 8 tabs.

I am on a fairly recent clean install of windows 7, but my profile directory including my extensions and everything were simply copied directly from my old WindowsXP profile, and it was fine there as well.

I can't imaging what would do this, do you have some strange extensions?

Now I am a bit confused...
Just got from work, and am pretty tired, but I am pretty sure that I wrote this post yesterday, not two weeks ago.
Yeah guys,I am using a pretty large number of extension, every once in a while a spot new one,and right now I have them, just a sec....26.
When I see somebody runs 16 add ons,ad needs only 100megs of RAM,I am on the best way to shoot my self.Right now(and I've opened only few, maybe 10 tabs)my Firefox consumes over 900 megs, and that is even not weird to me.I am starting to feel a bit nervous when reach 1,200megs.
Yes,I am cleaning cache every so,and I even have an add on for that too :)
Aaargh, looks like I'll have to move on on Chrome,or at least get rid of at least 15 add ons,but which ones?I am so addicted to them.

Well I see you have Ghostery there. I suspected you would have it with the problem you posted about. As to your initial problem in your first post, that is most likely what is causing the firefox process to not release after exit, and for the cpu usage to shoot up. Was a big problem for users using that addon. Complaints everywhere. They were supposed to have addressed it in the newest version, but if it was or not, who knows.

Newest is 2.0.3, think problem was with 2.02 or lower. Possibly problem still persists in newest version.
If you have a slightly older version than what's new, then that's most likely what it is. Disable or uninstall the ghostery addon.

You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know. :)

It's a big task, but you might think about rebuilding a new ff profile at some point. And keep the addons to a minimum. Should help with overall usage.
