Can't import Outlook Express into Windows Live Mail

I set up this brand new pc with Windows 7 last night and so far, I'm not a big fan. I really knew my way around windows xp....this is total culture shock. Where is everything? But I digress. I tried to set up Windows Live Mail as a replacement for Outlook Express. I followed the instructions exactly. The messages appeared to transfer, but in the end all I have is a bunch of empty folders. I tried several times. Can someone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

Thanks for the response. I've followed both of those tutorials. The process looks like it's transferring....even gives me a number of messages transferred...but windows live mail has empty folders including an empty storage folder.

Did you make sure that your messages weren't marked Read Only?

Select All Messages > Right Click > Properties > Make sure Read Only isn't checked

Microsoft said:
Windows Mail cannot import messages from IMAP or HTTP e-mail accounts, even if those messages were stored in Outlook Express. For information about these e-mail types, see POP3, SMTP, and other e‑mail server types. Windows Mail also cannot import any newsgroup messages you may have had stored in Outlook Express.

That means you cant import messages from hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc.

Moving messages from OE in XP to WLM in 7

Like Bonnie, I can't get my OE messages to appear in the WLM storage folder either. I could not follow the instruction: "Select All Messages > Right Click > Properties > Make sure Read Only isn't checked" - Where in WLM do I find "Select All Messages"?

Solution: Click on the Little Triangle

After you import messages from Outlook Express into Windows Live Mail, a folder will be created called "Imported Folder." When you click on it nothing appears to happen and a message will be displayed stating, "There are no items in this view." I had to do some looking on the Net, but I finally found the solution to this easy problem.

Just to the left of the "Imported Folder" you should see a little triangle (arrow). Click on the triangle and it should expand the folder to begin showing additional imported folders. Continue clicking on any triangles next to a folder. When you you get to a folder (e.g. Inbox) without any triangle next to it, click on it and the messages should display.

I can't think of the reason why Microsoft decided to make a different way to open folders in Windows Live Mail then from the way folders open in Hotmail, Outlook, or Windows itself, but at least I got it to work...

Hello all, it's quite possible to import messages into Windows Mail from Outlook Express. It can be done either, transfer the messages manually or take help of Windows Easy Transfer. But i find it quite unexciting so what could be the other solution?
If you are not able to convert it then, you can take help of various e-mail converter tools, which are specifically designed to meet users requirements. I would like to mentioned Email Converter tool from SysInfoTools which support converting DBX, PST, MSG and EML files to DBX, EML, PST, RTF, MSG and HTML file format.

install live mail on xp first

After much research and trial and error this is what I found to work very smooth. I installed Live Mail for XP ( from Windows site: Windows Live Essentials: Other Programs - Get started ) This is actuallu Live Essentials, but choose only the LIVE MAIL portion when downloading. I actually just chose 'RUN' and it downloaded and automatically converted my Outlook stuff ( contacts, mail, and folders ) to LIVE MAIL and it launched LIVE MAIL with all my stuff right there in front of me ( MUCH to my surprise ). I than did an EXPORT and chose what I wanted to export, and saved it to an external HDD. Plugged the HDD into my Win 7 machine, and did an IMPORT and browsed to find the export file I had created. VIOLA - All my outlook content was on my Win 7 machine in LIVE MAIL all set up and ready to go !

I can't find a run option on live essentials page

I can't find an option to 'run', only download, on the live essentials mail download page. This gives me the install icon on my desktop and there was no automatic import when I ran that. Can you provide any guidance on this?

Thanks

Murphy,

Where did you find a 'run' option on the windows live essentials: site? The link in your post does not take me to a 'get started' site.

I only get a download option which asks me to save the download. Running that does not convert any of my outlook express stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Transferring emails from Outlook Xpress to WLM

I had the tech guys transfer my emails from Outlook Express to WLM. I can see the messages in the imported folders and who they're from however when I try to click on them they will not open and I get the message that the contents of the messages can't be found. This is for all of them... Why did this happen and is there anything I can do about this? Thanks!
