Getting the setup.exe corrupt file install error help!

"windows 7 setup.exe corrupt file the file or directory is corrupt"

I'm trying to install 7 32bit OEM Home Premium with the legit bought holographic CD (not a burned image of any kind) onto a Gateway laptop with a brand new hard drive.

I was getting this error installing the OS the regular way booting to the cd and installing from it, so instead I copied the contents of the cd to a freshly quick formatted NTFS partition on the new laptop hard drive, then used bootsect and diskpart to setup the disk. It boots just fine and also gets the same error installing straight from the hard drive.

Is there some kind of update I need to slipstream into this cursed cd? How would I go about doing it? Thanks.

Your DVD is probably damaged, return it for a fresh one.

I remember when I bought XP MCE, and the second disk was so bad that it was unusable, and neither the retailer nor MS would do anything about it.

At the end of the day, if the store where you purchased Windows 7 does not want to exchange the disk, then remember that you're not paying for the media, but for the license sticker that accompanies it.

If your disc is giving problems, then try to locate a friend or associate with the same version of Windows, and copy that disc. Then install it using your license number.

Nope, find a friend with the version you want, or call Microsoft and have them ship you a DVD for a small fee.

Ok guys. I've tried 4 different DVD's and still getting the same error on this same laptop. It's NOT the DVD. I've tried installing via hard drive too. This is a brand new hard drive being used also. wtf? :(

For reference this is the exact error message:

The file or directory \Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-i..-nlsbuild.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_766560e0ef4e247e is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

then appears:

Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570

*edit* just for reference this fixed it. Wow... lol http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...570-error-code-install-one-easy-solution.html

*edit* again never mind. It installed, then it would hang at the starting up logo... tried reinstalling again and it wont install now.....again....*bangs head on desk*

I could certainly use some help guys :( if I go to format the partition I get "failed to format the selected partition. [error: 0x80070057]."

I've tried using their vista x86 disk drivers and they seem to load fine in the windows 7 loader, but I'm having the same problem anyways.

I've even went to intels website and downloaded the most current matrix storage driver that IS windows 7 compatible ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...D=&DwnldId=18860&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng ) and it still gives me the format error wtf. This is a new hard drive =\.

BTW The laptop this is all happening on is a Gateway MT6840 Notebook

This laptop has a weird bios option that makes you select which OS the laptop will run and the highest it goes is "XP/Vista." I wish Gateway would make a bios update to fix whatever this issue is!

The BIOS config sounds like it may be locked to Win7. Call Gateway to ask.

Have you removed all but 2gb RAM to try install? Swap RAM, test RAM.

Test HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp. Then run chkdsk /r on HD.

Next use the HD CD's zeroing utility or DISKPART Clean All command to wipe the HD to create a New partition and Format using Custom>Drive Options.

The drivers should be in the installer.

I got this error also

I used 5 separate windows 7 disks from enterprise to premium, also got the same error with vista business, home, and enterprise, after 4 hours of changing out disks and reformatting my drives I gave up and just reinstalled xp. The really odd thing is I used the very same disk to install on both my laptops and main tower not even a day ago. I get my versions from msdnaa, so I know they're legit. I'm thinking windows 7 although the upgrade manager claim all was cool, I don't think 7 like IDE HDDs. Was going to put server 2008 on it but figure I'm done I'll let it be an xp box, I use it for homework anyway.

lol!

OKAY! sooo. Not xp is telling that it cannot format either of the drives so it looks like it's going to be a Liniux box... Sometimes I ask myself why I'm a studying computer science. And I never have an answer.

Don't give up 'till you do a wipe of the HDD to be sure.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the first link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.
  • Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
  • If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

DISKPART : At PC Startup

Do a Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
