Under Vista 32 bit I used a combination of DVD43, an on the fly decrypter, and Handbrake to convert my collection of purchased DVDs to ipod touch format.
Since upgrading to Win7 64 bit I have been completely stumped. Firstly I thought I could just install the 2 programs above in XP mode and it would all work fine. The problem is that I can't play DVDs within XP mode as it says I don't have a DVD decoder. Obviously I do have a decoder as can play them within Win7. Is it possible to get my decoder working within the XP mode enviroment? Failing that can I get a dvd decoder to install within XP mode?
I have tried about 12 different free 64 bit dycrypters and converters within the win7 enviroment. They all seem to involve 30 minutes copying the DVD to the hard drive unencrypted and then the same time again running a 2nd program to convert to mp4 format. This is just painfully slow compared to the single pass I had with DVD43/Handbrake combo. Can any one recommend a slick method of getting my purchased DVDs onto itouch?
I only did 2 of my 100 DVD before upgrading so feeling a bit silly!!!
I was hoping to not have to cough up $40-50 for the decrypter on the basis I have already paid full price to own these! Thanks for suggestion.
I realyl don't understnad why i can't play DVD within XP mode. Have hunted on the Dell discs for any way to install PowerDVD into XP mode, but can't find it.
Problem is you have to decrypt commercial DVD you purchase before you can rip them. DVD43 is a free background decrypter but only runs under 32 bit. Happy for either solution in order of preference:
a) Free 64 bit background decrptr to use under windows 7 with Handbrake
b) Get my DVDs to play within XP mode so I can do it the old way. My PC was powerDVD installed, by Dell but it isn't on the reinstallation disks they provided with the pc. I assume I need to install PowerDVD or similar DVD decoder under XP mode for DVDs to play?
Have you looked on eBay for reinstallation disks for your computer. I know you said you would try Dell again, but it could be an option. I got a set of disks for a Dell Laptop really cheaply.
I did try that but you have to run the whole DVD through the decrypter and save a new version to your HD before you can rip it to mp4. So every DVD takes twice as long as the background decrypter.
It would apear it is not possible to view DVD with a virtual PC so this ca't be done. So I'll be purchasing one of the suggested background decypters. Thanks to everyone for input. Mike
